  • Today, I wanted to give a nod to Women's Equality Day, a super important date that marks a significant milestone in the fight for 'women's rights.' Celebrated on August 26th each year, this day commemorates the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920. This landmark amendment granted women the right to vote, a hard-won victory after decades of tireless advocacy, protests, and perseverance by suffragettes. The struggle didn't end there, though. Women continued to fight for equal rights across all facets of life. In 1971, Congress designated August 26th as Women's Equality Day due in large part to the efforts of leaders like Bella Abzug, who championed the recognition of women's ongoing struggle for equality. So, as we celebrate, let’s remember the brave women who paved the way and recognize that the journey towards true equality still continues. This is an International Struggle and should be an International Day.

  • In honor of Women’s Equality Day, President Biden's proclamation for 2024 reflects on the pivotal legacy of the 19th Amendment, while acknowledging ongoing battles for comprehensive equality. Lauding the relentless efforts of suffragists and modern advocates alike, the statement emphasizes the continuing struggle for voting rights, reproductive freedom, and economic equity for women and girls. Highlighting significant governmental actions over the past three and a half years—including historic investments in childcare, healthcare, and gender pay equity—the proclamation underscores the Administration's commitment to safeguarding women's rights and ensuring equal opportunities. To fortify these advancements, President Biden calls for the congressional ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and robust voting protections, urging a national recommitment to equality. This proclamation not only celebrates remarkable strides but also galvanizes collective action towards a more equitable society—because when women thrive, we all thrive. • 🌼 Breaking the Silence 🌼 "Breaking the silence on gender-based violence is crucial for the mental well-being of BIPOC communities. Healing begins when voices are heard." Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive issue that leaves deep scars, both physical and emotional. For Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, the intersecting challenges of systemic racism and GBV can make the path to healing particularly arduous. It's essential to: Listen: Create safe spaces where survivors can share their stories without fear of judgment or retaliation. Support: Offer tangible support, whether it’s through mental health services, legal assistance, or community resources. Educate: Raise awareness about the unique pressures and challenges faced by BIPOC individuals experiencing GBV. Advocate: Push for policies and practices that protect and empower survivors, ensuring their voices inform the solutions we adopt. By breaking the silence and fostering understanding, we can support the mental well-being of BIPOC communities and pave the way for comprehensive and inclusive healing. Let’s stand together, amplify voices, and make a difference. 💜 #BreakTheSilence #GBV #MentalHealthMatters #BIPOCHealing #SupportSurvivors #EndGBV #InclusiveHealing

“Black women [are] being promoted into leadership positions and then given the near-impossible task of fixing a broken culture or turning around an insolvent organization, all while incurring the added labor and toll of acting as representatives for one or many systemically marginalized identities and populations.” See what else Cicley Gay has to say in the article, “There Is Nothing Uncomplicated about Being a Black Woman Leader”: https://bit.ly/4f4AhBd
