Innovative technologies for sustainable functional & printed electronics

About us

ECOTRON is a Horizon Europe project aiming to improve the sustainability, circularity and recyclability of printed electronics (PE). ECOTRON consortium, consisting of research centers (TNO - Holst Centre, CEA, VTT and ITENE), a university (POLIMI), industry (Técnicas Reunidas, Beckton Dickinson, Signify, POLAR and Johnson & Johnson - Janssen) and an SME (AMIRES), focuses on: * Circular build-up of electronics: recycling of substrate (solvolysis, chemical recycling) metal recovery (supercritical fluid extraction, solvometallurgy), reversible interconnects (Diels-Alder, Gecko) and separation technologies (Photonic, Sacrifice layer); * Renewable and compostable electronics: biobased or compostable materials for substrates and inks; * Setting up PE recycling protocols and developing a blueprint for an industrial-scale PE recycling plant. Developed technologies will be demonstrated in 4 use-cases: * Medical application: On-body drug dosing system (Beckton Dickinson) * Consumer electronics: Light foil (Signify) * Wearable electronics: Sports/activity tracker (POLAR) * Smart packaging: Temperature sensing labels for drug packaging (Janssen - Johnson & Johnson) This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101070167.

⚙️ 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗡 One innovative approach in the ECOTRON project involves cementation. This process deposits a less noble metal (such as copper or zinc) onto a more noble metal surface. By leveraging the electrochemical potential difference between these metals, silver can be selectively deposited onto cementing particles. 🧪 How It Works: 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Using copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) as cementing agents. 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿: The electrochemical potential difference facilitates electron transfer. 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Silver deposits onto the surface of the cementing particles.

🔬 Introducing our ECOTRON Partner 🔬 We are excited to announce Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) as a crucial partner in our ECOTRON project! 🌍 POLIMI is one of the most outstanding universities in Europe. Founded in 1863, it has a rich history of focusing on quality and innovation in teaching and research.  🛠️ Role in the ECOTRON Project: 🔺 POLIMI manages all aspects related to creating more circular and sustainable substrates and inks using the principles of green and sustainable chemistry. 🌱🔄 POLIMI is also responsible for identifying Circular Business Models (CBMs) related to flexible electronics, substrates, and metal inks. 📈🔄 🔺 POLIMI develops innovative substrates through the control of the macrostructure of end-of-life polyesters and the use of natural polymers like proteins. Recycled PET is regraded using molecules from natural sources, while compostable substrates are created through dynamic covalent polymeric networks, allowing for the recovery of starting materials. 🌿♻️ The inks are produced through a technology patented by POLIMI, which controls the solubility parameter and the dispersion of sp2 carbon allotropes. 🖋️🔬 🔺 POLIMI aims to increase circularity in flexible electronics using end-of-life polymers regraded through bio-based solutions and inks characterized by silver-free fillers. They also identify CBMs and support partners in implementing specific strategies. 🔄🌐 Join us in welcoming Politecnico di Milano as a valuable partner in our mission to create a greener, more sustainable future through electronics innovation! 🌍💡 Vincenzina Barbera Maurizio Galimberti Alberto Bottari CMICPolimi Paolo Rosa Sergio Terzi Farouk Abdulhamid Dipartimento di Ingegneria Gestionale e della Produzione - DIGEP Politecnico di Milano simone vesentini Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria, Politecnico di Milano
