As hundreds of athletes from around the world gathered in Paris last month, a smaller gathering of entrepreneurs was happening, spearheaded by Pharrell Williams. Two Atlanta-based founders were part of the group, dining with Williams and other executives of the luxury group LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, connecting with former Olympians, billionaire investors and French entrepreneurs. The trip to Paris was paid for and organized by Black Ambition, a nonprofit initiative founded by Williams in 2020 based on the premise that ambition is limitless, but access is not. It invests in Black, Hispanic and HBCU founders, provides mental health support for entrepreneurs and connects them to potential corporate sponsors and future investors. When Lisa Lucas was hired in the summer of 2020 to take a big job at the country’s largest book publisher, there was a sense that things were finally starting to change in what has long been an overwhelmingly white industry. She became the publisher of Pantheon and Schocken, imprints within Penguin Random House. Executives in the book business often spend decades working their way up the ranks. While Lucas was a well-known figure in the literary world — she had previously been the executive director of the National Book Foundation, which administers the National Book Awards — she had never worked in corporate publishing. Lucas’s hiring was written up in major news outlets as evidence that publishers were committed to diversifying. As the first Black person to run Pantheon in its 80-year history, and one of the few Black women to head a major publishing division, she faced enormous pressure. Not only did she need to learn quickly on the job and succeed as a publisher, she was also saddled with expectations that she would help drive change at a moment when publishers faced calls to diversify their catalogs and companies. “There’s pressure on you when you’re one of few,” Lucas said in an interview this summer. “That was a lot to lay on me.” Learn more about his story: https://lnkd.in/dnN2wHeK #Diversity #BlackFirsts #BlackWomenLead

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is finally taking steps to address decades of discrimination, awarding $2 billion to Black and other minority farmers. Legal Defense Fund (LDF) President and Director-Counsel Janai Nelson released the following statement, commending this decision. “We commend the Biden Administration’s continued commitment to correct past wrongs and acknowledge the federal government’s critical role in providing recompense for its own discrimination. When more information emerges about the distribution of these payments and their impact, we will work to ensure the agency upholds its commitment to further remedying the effects of discrimination in farming, especially as it relates to serving the needs of Black farmers.” More than 23,000 farmers are receiving direct payments, but National Black Farmers Association Founder and President John Boyd Jr. wants more—”We want our land, and I want to be very, very clear about that.” Read more https://lnkd.in/gHzrzJCk #BlackFarmers #RacialInequity #USDA

I had great time at the US Open with my youngest kiddo. It was so fun to be there with the The Executive Leadership Council (ELC). While Lulu loved the tennis, I loved this picture with my good friend and fellow ELC member Calvin Emanuel along with his son Justin Emanuel and of course my “not so little anymore” daughter, Lulu Peterson. Hopefully Justin and Lulu can represent the next generation of ELC members or US tennis stars. . . outcome depends on which one you ask :). Thank you to Michael Hyter, Gale King, and everyone else at the ELC for arranging such a wonderful experience!
