Our #cytometry node studies the complexities of cellular populations and the molecular structure of single cells. We will often do this via either fluorescent or heavy-metal labelling to target specific parts of the cell that we can then isolate and detect. But this limits us to only seeing what we have labelled. The Nu Instruments Ltd #Vitesse is unique in Australia and gets around this limitation by using time-of-flight mass spectrometry to detect every element that makes up a cell, whether labelled or not. Coupled with the imageBIO266 laser-ablation system from Elemental Scientific Lasers, this analysis can be extended from single cells out to sections of tissue. Using these capabilities, we can study the immune response to various diseases and not only identify precisely where the immune cells reside within tissues and organs, but also gather information about their elemental composition and that of the tissue.
