Mid-Summer Check In Part 2: The Emma Bowen Conference! Just wow, wow, wow! I can’t even give enough thanks to the Emma Bowen Foundation for how gratefullllll I am to attend this conference. They put on such a fulfilling conference and you can tell they all care about you! It has been such an amazing time in New York. I’ve learned from industry professionals on so much. The need to learn how to pivot, how to be a jack of all trades, and what it takes to not give up. When I wasn’t learning, I was connecting. Getting to meet the amazing superstars that are Emma Bowen fellows is just such a blessing! I was so happy to be in a room full of people who looked like me, had a passion for media like me, and just had a hunger to succeed. Thank you to Warner Bros. Discovery and Hearst for hosting us! Thank you to all the panelists for their amazing insight! Thank you for all the company executives for coming and spending time with us! Again, shoutout Hearst for an amazing breakfast this morning because it’s #HearstFirst. I’m so excited to see what I continue to learn this summer at KMBC 9 / KCWE TV and with the Emma Bowen Foundation! #Hearst #Mizzou #Media #Journalism #classof2027 #Intern #EmmaBowen #internship

Mid-Summer Check In Part 1: As you all know, I’m so grateful to be placed at KMBC 9 / KCWE TV this summer with the Emma Bowen Foundation. I’ve had the opportunity to work most of my days in the producer pod. Spending my days assisting with the 4, 5, and 6 pm shows as a dayside intern has taught me so much about proper news writing, ENPS news system, and the best organizations if each show. Outside of producing, I’ve gone out with reporters and shot stand-ups to see how I would feel being on camera. Then in the same breath, writing out packages, whips, or ins and outs. I’ve had quite a busy summer! Here’s what I learned so far: ⏱️Quick Thinking is essential in the newsroom. It doesn’t matter if you’re a producer, reporter, photographer, or on the assignment desk, you have to be quick on your feet. When breaking news happens, like the first ever president being convicted of a felony (which happened on my first week there🥲), there is no time to question, just think critically and do your best. Although I can’t call the shots yet, I feel more than prepared for any surprise around the corner. 👥Telling stories and telling this RIGHT is essential in this day and age. Not many people realize how large of an audience broadcast journalism serves. Yes, the 5 W’s are important but the most important one is the WHY. Everyday before I go to my internship, I have to think about the audience we serve and why they chose to continue watching. It’s because the stories we all tell as journalists keep them safe, informed, and protective. Just because of that, there is no better reason for me to be in the media industry. ✍🏾Culturally Conscious Writting. Yes, stories need to be told, good and bad. This summer I’ve learned the essential difference between writing the facts and also being culturally aware. Behind every story and every incident, there is an individual. There must be unbiased thinking plus diversity in the newsroom to ensure that events and stories are told in the right way. And as I head into July, I will work even harder at my internship to get as much as I can out of working there. Please stay tuned for (part 2😁) and my end of summer post to see what I have learned over my 8 weeks. #Mizzou #Journalism #Mizzoumade #Media #Intern #Internship

This past week I was able to attend the Emma Bowen Conference! It was even better than I expected, and I am so grateful for all the connections and the lessons gained through this experience. This conference has made me feel more excited than ever for my future. I am excited to continue my internship with WYFF 4 and my journey with Hearst Television! Some of the key takeaways from this event are: - Networking is one of your strongest tools - Sometimes you have to make short term sacrifices to have long-term rewards - Close mouths don’t get fed - Be open to change - Find a company that will let you grow - Say yes to any and every opportunity because you never know where it will lead you - It is ok to fail, but it is not ok to quit - Be meticulous about the people you choose to keep around you - Be 100% and completely authentically yourself continuously I want to thank the Emma Bowen Foundation! The support and guidance is unmatched and you have made my dream become a reality. To Jen Harriger, Akili Franklin, Nikki A. Bethel (She/Her/Hers), Katherine Barnett, SPHR thank you for taking the time to speak with me and providing me with your tremendous amount of knowledge! Thank you to the panels for your amazing advice and information. Lastly I want to give a huge congratulations and thank you to all my Emma Bowen Fellows! It was a pleasure meeting you all and experiencing New York with you! I genuinely want to stay in touch and I am so excited to see all the amazing things you all do in the future!! See you all soon!
