Kyle Ambrozi was recently working with a member who was looking to pick up some extra hours at a work-from-home side gig. A company had contacted them and sent them a large check to deposit, and they were looking for advice on how to handle the check. Kyle's instincts kicked in and he knew immediately the tell-tale signs of a scam. He advised them to destroy the check without depositing to their account and to cease all communication with the company. With his quick thinking and fraud-spotting expertise, Kyle saved his member from a big financial loss and a lot of hassle in cleaning it up. Bravo, Kyle! 👏 Money is tight for a lot of people, and 'golden opportunities' can be extra tempting when we are feeling vulnerable. Work-from-home scams are extremely common and wreak havoc on people and their finances. We are highly trained fraud-fighting experts - if you are unsure about a job, surprised by a check, or think you might be the victim of a scam, please call us. Always trust your gut. When in doubt, sus it out! 🔍 #empeople #empeoplecu #fraudsquad #fraud #scams #wfhscams #financialfraud #financialguidance #financialwellness #financialliteracy #susitout

Don’t be fooled by the name – Pig Butchering Scams are serious, and they’re on the rise, both nationally and at Empeople Credit Union. The term "pig butchering" metaphorically describes the process of fattening a pig before slaughter, which parallels the way scammers groom their victims to extract as much money as possible. Pig Butchering Scams involve a long-term, elaborate con where fraudsters build trust with their victims over time before convincing them to invest in fraudulent schemes, typically involving cryptocurrency. I encourage you to look past the name of this awful scam (admittedly hard to overlook) and read this - you never know someone in your personal or professional circle you may be able to gently educate. A victim meets a contact (scammer), the contact (again, a scammer) gains their trust over an impressively long period of time, and then topics of investment arise - sometimes the victim will even bring it up first in one case I recall. The scammer offers to help coach them on investments, often crypto for it’s anonymity. These are particularly devastating scams. Victims can log into a fake website to see their investment for a time - even take out some of the investment so they feel “safe,” - until they can’t. That visual is powerful and victims often feel put off at those trying to sound the alarm.
Where are pig butchering scams growing, who are they targeting, and how much are they taking and making? The answers to those questions are both sobering and terrifying, according to Erin West, a Cybercrime and Crypto Prosecutor and Deputy District Attorney in Santa Clara County in California, speaking during our kickoff panel for ACFCS’ Crypto and Web3 Symposium last week. “This is a scam type being perpetuated by Chinese organized crime working in Syndicates in Southeast Asia. Now that geographical footprint is spreading to Dubai, South America, and Eastern Europe,” she said. “This typology that we once thought was contained to a small area is growing and it is growing in areas where we as law enforcement have little ability to influence what is happening in those countries. And it is deliberately placed in those locations.” Who are these criminals targeting? The bad guys have a playbook for anyone and everyone. A businessman in their 30s. A grieving widow in their 70s. If you have a cell phone, you are a target — and it all starts with a seemingly innocuous stray text. The scammer uses social engineering to groom the victim, taking weeks or months to gain their confidence, even affection, before introducing the victim to a fake crypto investment platform and stealing every penny they have. Even though, on the site, the victim has millions of dollars, their money is already gone. And when they try to take it out, they are told they must pay a 24 percent tax with new money. “By the time these victims get to us they are literally destitute,” West said. “They are selling homes and selling cars, just trying to exist, and at the same time they are exhausted by the loss of a love they thought they had.” Some estimates of losses to romance and investment scams are more than $5 billion, though that could be as high as $50 billion as many victims don’t come forward. What’s worse, many of the scammers victimizing people are victims themselves, trafficked or duped to work 12 to 16-hour days in prison-like compounds with bars on the windows and nets to prevent people from jumping. There are potentially more than 200,000 people alone in sprawling scam compounds in Myanmar and Cambodia. “The scale of it is massive,” West said. “These people aren’t playing. This is their job. This is their company. They think of it like a company. They have built a massive infrastructure to engage in their scamming activities. Today, their scamming activities are pig butchering.” If you're ready to upgrade your career, join a dedicated community of fincrime professionals, gain access to events like the Crypto and Web3 Compliance Symposium, learn from hundreds of hours interactive courses, and much more, you need to become an ACFCS member today: https://bit.ly/4aM60Ez #FinCrime #Fraud #AML #CFCS #PigButchering
