The ADA, signed 34 years ago, transformed the lives of people with disabilities. For the Deaf community that we serve, daily we are a cog in the wheel. Deaf individuals have access to communication in educational settings, medical environments, business and legal (to name a few). To imagine a world when they were shut out or not understood because there were no laws to ensure they had equal access is hard to comprehend. Today is a good day - it's a day to remember how far we've come.

Interpreting for interesting people is always a great experience. Today, I received some excellent feedback from a satisfied customer, who praised Ginger Fairbanks, the interpreter, for her professionalism, punctuality, and preparation. It's always a pleasure to hear such positive comments and it certainly was a nice start to my day! Ginger had the opportunity to interpret for the Cake Boss at Syracuse University recently. It was a fun experience and as a huge Cake Boss fan, she felt honored to have been a part of it.

I wrote this blog post originally in 2015... unfortunately my predictions came true as far as too often dependency for interpreters being through a computer screen.
As Interpreters, we are often present in some of life's most important moments. We are there for the happy moments, like when a child is born or a couple gets married. We are also there for the difficult moments, like when a doctor delivers bad news or a loved one passes away. We provide a crucial service, allowing effective communication to take place between people who speak different languages and come from different cultures. However, in today's world, this service is sometimes being replaced by technology. Instead of a human Interpreter, people are forced to rely on a computer screen or a sign language Interpreter whose hands move through the digital light of a tiny screen. While this may be a stop-gap measure, it can never replace the compassion, understanding, and sensitivity that a human Interpreter can provide. So, who do you share your best and worst moments with? For many, those moments are now being shared with a portable piece of technology. Let's remember the importance of effective communication and the role that human Interpreters play in facilitating it.
