Influential people and influencers are not one and the same. When I think of influential leaders people like Jane Fraser, CEO of Citigroup, or Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, or Jensen Huang, CEO of Invidia, or Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM, come to mind. I would not call any of them influencers. Yet, their influence is undeniable. Each of these people, and so many more business leaders like them are recognized by their staff, their shareholders, and the general public for their contributions, thought leadership, innovation, responsible choices, and sustainable business practices, among many other traits. However, much like leadership itself. A title does not make one a leader. A title does not make one influential. Yet, career development requires one to increase their influence as they progress to the level of leadership or authority they seek. Growing one's professional influence can happen in many ways. Sometimes it happens rather naturally as someone rises through the ranks of an organization. Sometimes their influence is carefully designed through PR and communications specialists. You don't need to have CEO aspirations to have influence within you company, or with the general public. You will need to put in some effort to communicate your messages, your ideas, your vision, and your stories. LinkedIn, the very platform you and I are on right now is an excellent way to build your influence and credibility with a large audience. The platform provides several tools to help you reach your audience, knowing what they are, and how to use them is the first step. I think about this in the context of Energy Hire. The company is committed to creating a better hiring experience for both workers and employers. Part of this commitment is helping to provide resources like this. Take a look, and as always, your comments and feedback are gold!

Working in tech gives me the ability to serve people at scale whether the company is a Fortune 100 giant, or a fast-growing seed stage startup. Energy Hire caught my attention for many reasons. The product, the mission, the potential and the people were all positive attributes. Prior to joining I spent time learning about the energy industry, and why this company is positioned well for the future. The energy transition is underway as companies old and new are innovating and adapting to lower carbon energy sources. The renewable energy industry is estimated to grow 8% this year, 9% in 2025, and 40% by 2030. Growth means jobs. To match the growth expectations of the renewable energy industry, close to 10 million jobs are expected to be added. Solar energy is leading the way in growth, as 7,500,000 of the new jobs by 2030. 1,500,000 of the renewable energy jobs are expected to support the wind power sector. In the US, there are approximately 3.3 million clean energy jobs, about 68% of which are in energy efficiency, about 16% are renewable power generation jobs, clean energy vehicles make up about 11% of these 3.3 million jobs and the last 5% or so work in storage and grid jobs. Not only will there be massive job growth, many of these new jobs will require companies large and small to learn how to hire people with different skills, education, and experience than before. Many other industries are experiencing similar transitions. I think of the auto industry as a prime example. Last year I met with a talent acquisition leader at one of the Big 3 in Detroit. They told me they source talent from big tech more often than from the auto industry. They've identified a different skill set and mindset for their next generation of workers. Technology will play a role in adding efficiency to the hiring process for talented professionals looking for fulfilling careers as well as for the employers eager to attract and retain top talent. If you or someone you know loves working in tech, but wants to jump into an area on a hockey stick of growth, consider how tech and energy are now one and the same.

If hard skills and accomplishments are gold, soft skills are platinum. The leaders I admire most are masters of soft skills. If you think about the leaders you look up to, you might find the same to be true. At Energy Hire I spend a lot of time thinking about how to help both job seekers and employers make better matches through insights and technology. Soft skills are listed on someone's resume, but how can one prove to others they have never met that they truly possess and excel with using those soft skills? Thoughts? Whether or not you aspire to be a CEO spending time on improving your soft skills will likely have a positive and noticeable impact on your professional potential. This guide is a thought-starter, but if you want to dive into any of these topics there are tons of great resources available to you. LinkedIn Learning has several really good learning tracks on these soft skills. If you found this content to be helpful, insightful, or valuable, please let me know in the comments or via a DM. If you have suggestions for improvement, I also love constructive criticism. FYI, this is a post I made earlier today with a deck that had a minor error. The original post is up too. #careerdevelopment #softskills #ownyourcareertrajectory #professionalskills

Is the traditional, linear job search process still the best path to a new job? Look around your network and you'll see many people post their job search stats as their search continues from weeks, to months, and in some cases, more than a year. Many of those stats look like: - # of jobs applied - # of recruiter calls - # of interviews - # of offers Is this the best way to find a new job? When many jobs have dozens, or even hundreds of applications in the first day they are posted, what are your odds of standing out? A great resume can be a great asset, but have you tried alternative paths to securing an interview? Some creative ideas are in this handy guide. I don't have all of the answers, but I am glad to help you with your search if you could use a hand.
