Did you know...that Episcopal Health Foundation is based in Houston and was founded in 2013 by The Episcopal Diocese of Texas upon the transfer of St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System? Bishop C Andrew Doyle led the effort to use more than $1 billion in proceeds to start a foundation that would reshape the way the Episcopal Church engages the community and change the way we think about health. EHF chose to focus on improving community health, rather than just health care, because the opportunity for good health starts long before you need to see a doctor. Health systems need scalable solutions to address non-medical drivers of health like access to healthy foods, having safe places to exercise, affordable health insurance coverage, and much more. EHF was created as a community-based philanthropy to spark transformative change within the diocese’s 80-county service area that now serves more than 15 million Texans. Good nutrition is essential for good health. But food is much more than calories, writes EHF's C.J. Eisenbarth Hager. "It is culture, connection, and community." Check out CJ's latest article about the important "backbone" work needed to create the right conditions where all Texans can meet their basic food and nutrition needs without question. It's a story about one man's creative vision to combine unused land across The Episcopal Diocese of Texas and people eager to engage in meaningful community-building to create school and community gardens that produce much more than fruits and vegetables. Latino children in many neighborhoods across #Houston face stark health disparities that pose significant challenges to their well-being and future potential. These disparities are part of a broader pattern of inequality that affects access to essential resources like quality health care, nutritious food, and safe living environments. The implications of these gaps are profound, leading to higher rates of chronic illnesses and limiting the opportunities for these children to thrive. To truly address these disparities, we need a comprehensive approach that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of medical care. This means advocating for policies that improve access to affordable health care services while also addressing non-medical drivers of health that contribute to these inequities. Community engagement, educational initiatives, and economic support systems are all critical components in leveling the playing field for Latino children and ensuring they have the tools they need to succeed. Building a future where every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to lead a healthy, fulfilling life requires collective effort. By working together—across sectors, communities, and policy frameworks—we can dismantle the barriers that prevent too many children from realizing their full potential. #HealthNotJustHealthCare #HealthEquity #SDOH #NMDOH From the Houston Chronicle: https://lnkd.in/ga95QhdE

Health care is more than just clinical treatment. It's about addressing the broader non-medical drivers of health that impact our overall well-being. In a recent blog, AcademyHealth highlights the critical role of U.S. policies in education, housing, and transportation, which can have an even greater effect on health outcomes than direct medical care. The report emphasizes the importance of cross-sector collaboration, advocating for a "Health in All Policies" approach. By integrating health and equity considerations into policymaking across various sectors, we can significantly improve population health, advance health equity, and strengthen our workforce. This holistic view of health aligns with EHF’s mission to improve #HealthNotJustHealthCare at all levels. Ensuring that health is a priority in all areas of policy will lead to more comprehensive and effective solutions for our communities. To truly improve health outcomes, we must work together across sectors and prioritize policies that address the root causes of health disparities. #HealthEquity #NMDOH #SDOH https://lnkd.in/gVQywWPR

The alarming rise of type-2 diabetes among children and teens has significant health risks that can shorten life spans. Non-medical drivers of health, such as access to nutritious food and safe exercise spaces, are critical factors in this trend. Understanding and addressing non-medical factors is essential to preventing diabetes and working toward community health equity. For instance, exposure to chronic stress and air pollution, alongside sugar-rich diets, significantly contribute to the increase in type-2 diabetes, particularly in communities facing barriers to good health. We need comprehensive strategies that encompass better access to healthy foods, safe environments for physical activity to prevent diabetes and its severe complications in young Texans. https://lnkd.in/e_AkdeVt #HealthNotJustHealthCare #DiabetesPrevention #Prediabetes #SDOH #NMDOH
