Equimundo is a global organization that promotes men’s involvement as equitable, nonviolent fathers and caregivers. They co-founded MenCare, a campaign that aims to achieve family well-being, gender equality, and better health for mothers, fathers, and children. The Generation Foundation is supporting Equimundo’s research, advocacy, and programming to support men’s participation in the care economy and challenge harmful gender norms. Some of their initiatives include the International Men and Gender Equality Survey, or ‘IMAGES’, a comprehensive survey that measures attitudes and practices on gender equality topics like caregiving, as well as the State of the World’s Fathers report. SOWF is a biennial report that provides up-to-date global data on fatherhood and its impact on families, societies, and gender justice. Eighty-five percent of fathers with children under 18 say being a parent is the most or one of the most important aspects of who they are as a person, and we want to mobilize men to vote with this in mind. Engage. Listen more. Don’t panic. Our research in the US finds that young men’s largest gathering spaces are online and much of their lives are spent in virtual meeting spaces. This means that we have to pay attention to what’s happening there—the positive, the harmful, and the in between. How can parents, educators, and media content makers help prevent violence online and off? Stay in the room for the difficult talks. By engaging with men, caring for them, listening to them, and understanding what they consume online, they both live better lives and they become better allies for others—for women’s rights, for racial justice, for our democracy. Despite the prevalence of mental health struggles among both men and women, men are much less likely than women to ask for help in scripted TV. Our partners at the Geena Davis Institute collected data about mental health portrayals in 409 episodes of scripted television from 2021–2022 that were popular with children and teens, and then conducted statistical analyses to learn how on-screen portrayals of mental health varied by gender. Some key takeaways: 💡 Male TV characters were about 2x as likely as female characters to struggle with substance use disorder. ❗ Female TV characters were 12x more likely than male characters to struggle with self-harm. 🧠 Women on TV were more likely than men to discuss their mental health issues.
