Erie County is located on the western border of New York State along Lake Erie, part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Area. With almost one million residents, the county covers 1,058 square miles and consists of three cities and 25 town governments. Erie County is governed under a "home rule" charter which separates legislative and executive functions. County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz, elected to a four-year term, is the chief executive officer of the county. The County Legislature is the county's governing body, consisting of 11 members elected to two-year terms. Other elected positions are Comptroller, Clerk, District Attorney, and Sheriff. Erie County government employs over 5,600 individuals and has an annual budget of $1.45 billion. Erie County administers vital public services, provides law enforcement and maintains public infrastructure for its roughly one million residents. The Erie County Executive is Mark C.
