NY's largest electrified bus depot opens! This week, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced the opening of the state’s largest electrified bus depot. Located in Buffalo, and operated by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA), the depot is a major step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality in urban areas. The project will serve as a model for other transit agencies around the state to transition from diesel fuel-powered to clean electric transportation. See EVinfo.net's article: https://lnkd.in/gtN7B8eT The depot, equipped with 36 overhead charging systems and a new substation to support future expansion, is designed to facilitate the transition from diesel-powered buses to zero-emission electric vehicles (EVs). NFTA’s long-term plan aims for the Cold Spring maintenance garage to exclusively support zero-emission vehicles by 2035, aligning with broader state and national goals for carbon neutrality. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) has made substantial progress in electrifying its fleet. Since receiving its first battery electric bus in 2022, the NFTA now operates 24 electric buses and plans to introduce an additional 21 over the next two years. The Cold Spring garage, with its current electrical capacity, can support approximately 50 electric buses, half of the depot’s fleet, and is designed to scale up for full electrification. NFTA’s commitment to operating a 100 percent zero-emission bus fleet by 2035 is a critical part of New York State’s broader efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve public health, and transition to clean energy, especially in historically under-resourced communities that face greater environmental challenges. The New York Power Authority (NYPA) played a crucial role in the development of Buffalo’s new electrified bus depot by overseeing the design and installation of the charging infrastructure. National Grid played a pivotal role in supporting the electric grid upgrade and contributed to funding the substation. Funding of $67 million came from the Federal Transit Administration and over $33 million from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Governor Hochul, NFTA Executive Director Kim Minkel, New York Power Authority President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll and National Grid Regional Director Ken Kujawa spoke about the momentous achievement. New York State’s impressive climate agenda is focused on an equitable transition to a green economy, creating sustainable jobs while ensuring that clean energy investments benefit disadvantaged communities. The plan, including clean energy public transportation, addresses air pollution and fights climate change. Smart charging is ground-breaking, however, grid-aware smart charging is a far superior choice.  If you are wondering how smart charging and grid-aware smart charging are different and how they relate to each other, EVinfo.net gives a breakdown of their differences, and proves why grid-aware is the way to go. See EVinfo.net's article: https://lnkd.in/g93ipvka Smart charging refers to a system where EV charging is controlled and optimized through communication between the EV, the charging station, and sometimes the user. It allows scheduling, load management, user control, energy source optimization (including renewables), cost tracking and faster charging. Grid-aware smart charging takes the concept of smart charging further by incorporating real-time data from the power grid to optimize charging in a way that benefits both the user and the grid. It allows real-time grid interaction, dynamic pricing, demand response, and more. With more EVs on the road, reliance on overnight charging—particularly driven by time-of-use rates offering lower prices at night—poses new risks. BluWave-ai’s EV Everywhere elevates grid-aware smart charging to a new level, optimizing EV charging while keeping users in full control. EV Everywhere is compatible with a wide range of car brands and models, and offers the capability to adjust charging schedules based on current grid conditions. With a focus on maximizing renewable energy usage, BluWave-ai aligns charging with times when renewable power is abundant. Its system is designed to adapt to evolving dynamic pricing models and emerging grid policies. Users can earn BluPoint Rewards through the BluWave-ai app, redeemable at various businesses. Additionally, they can save on energy bills and potentially earn rebates for participating in grid support programs. Shashi C., Business Development Manager at BluWave-ai, and Devashish Paul, CEO and Founder of BluWave-ai, spoke about EV Everywhere and the company's innovative solutions. BluWave-ai’s innovative and groundbreaking EV Everywhere is highly recommended by EVinfo.net. We are honored to support this important product, as the company is a leader in leveraging AI for clean energy and EV charging. Colorado expanded its cash-for-clunkers EV rebate program. An additional $9 million fund for 2024-25 was announced for the Vehicle Exchange Colorado (VXC) Program. This was a 60% increase from the initial $5.7 million, demonstrating the program’s success in its first year, as more old, high-emission cars were taken off the road than anticipated. See EVinfo.net's article: https://lnkd.in/gm5K_ssy Vehicle Exchange Colorado (VXC) has made a significant impact in its first year, successfully removing 879 old or emissions-failing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles from the state’s roads. Launched on August 31, 2023, the program is designed to help low- and moderate-income residents trade in their older, less efficient vehicles for new or used electric vehicles (EVs). The program is beneficial for income-qualified buyers, offering an extra $6,000 point-of-sale rebate on top of existing incentives when they trade in an older vehicle for a new EV. For those opting to buy a used EV, they can receive up to $4,000 through the exchange rebate. Combined with federal tax credits and utility rebates, these incentives have the potential to slash the cost of some electric vehicles by more than half, making EV ownership more accessible to a wider range of consumers. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and Colorado Energy Office Executive Director Will Toor spoke about the ground-breaking and highly commendable funding to expand EV adoption. Programs such as the Vehicle Exchange Colorado (VXC) Program are important, to make new and used EVs affordable. EV prices remain high in September 2024. According to data from Kelley Blue Book, the average transaction price for electric cars was $56,520 vs. gas-powered vehicles at $48,401 in July 2024. Low-cost new EVs are uncommon at the moment. EVinfo.net’s advice to EV buyers is to “hang in there.” New EV prices will come down, as America moves toward mass adoption, making EV production more profitable for OEMs. The EV transition is the most difficult and expensive disruption the automotive industry has ever seen, since gas vehicles first replaced the horse and buggy. What's your opinion? How can state governments implement more incentives to help drivers make the EV transition? California received $150M in federal funding for thousands of EV charging ports. VELOZ reported that California’s new EV market share for Q2 2024 reached 25.7%, the highest Q2 sales share on record. However, barriers remain for early EV adoption in CA and across America. California received nearly $150 million to support the construction of over 9,200 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports. This funding is part of a broader $521-million federal infrastructure package that has been distributed across 29 states, eight federally recognized tribes, and the District of Columbia. See EVinfo.net's article: https://lnkd.in/g4fEyz9a The majority of the funds, totaling $102 million, will be allocated to the California Department of Transportation. These funds will be used to develop charging and hydrogen fueling stations for zero-emission vehicles, including trucks, along key freight corridors in California, Oregon, and Washington. Los Angeles County, the city of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will receive $15 million to construct over 1,250 accessible EV charging stations, with a particular focus on under-served communities. Additionally, the Fort Independence Indian Community is set to receive $15.1 million to establish an EV charging hub along U.S. Route 395, which connects Southern California with Mammoth. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) will benefit from $14 million to install charging ports at BART-managed parking facilities, enhancing EV infrastructure in the San Francisco Bay Area. In California, and around the United States, the lack of multifamily EV charging is a big problem. Innovative company Automotive Charging Solutions (ACS) offers answers to this problem. The $150 million California received is addressing the problem of not enough charging ports. However, the problem of EV charging reliability remains in California and around the country. Two innovative, groundbreaking companies, Endeavour Technology and EVSTAR, are addressing the EV charging reliability problem. A significant 55% of electric vehicle (EV) charger failures are attributed to network connectivity problems, addressed by Endeavour Technology’s innovative nSpire solution. Through its comprehensive warranty solutions, EVSTAR ensures that adequate funds are available for the repair or replacement of EV charging devices. It's impressive partnership with Blink Charging made major headlines. EVinfo.net suggests that the US government, and all state and local governments, as well as private investors, step up their efforts to assist the EV transition. If we don’t, we’ll continue to be left behind the rest of the world, and our economy will continue to suffer.
