We are excited to share that Korea Zinc has been ranked Top 2 among Korea’s leading ESG companies by ‘Susinvest’, a major domestic ESG rating and proxy advisory firm in Korea.🏆   This year's assessment targeted 1,072 publicly listed companies in Korea. Korea Zinc ranked second among the 50 companies with assets over KRW 2 trillion, securing the second-highest position.🥈   Our remarkable improvement in ranking is attributed to significant efforts in various governance aspects including ▲ the attendance rate of independent directors at board meetings, ▲ the suitability of board composition, ▲ the increased number of female directors, ▲ appropriate director remuneration, ▲ the appointment of a compliance officer, ▲ separation of the roles of board chairman and CEO, and ▲ operation of an internal transactions committee. These efforts led to a substantial rise in their assessment rating and ranking.   Notably, Korea Zinc showed the most significant improvement among companies of similar size, jumping two levels in the comparative assessment rating compared to that of the first half of last year.

Join us in celebrating Environment Day for a greener and energy-efficient future 🍀 Korea Zinc is championing renewable energy generation and green hydrogen production as part of our transition to building a green portfolio with the global response to climate change emerging as the center of future business. Furthermore, we are spearheading green sourcing by bolstering our secondary battery material business. We also aim to create a system for recycling secondary raw materials, as well as electronic and metal scrap to guarantee stable material supplies and ultimately achieve green management. We will continue to advance towards a sustainable future by producing essential minerals with clean energy sources and establishing an environmentally friendly production base using waste materials. 📰Korea Zinc plans to increase its copper production by about five times by 2028 through resource recycling in the U.S. market. In an interview with Bloomberg on the 13th (local time), Yun B. Choi, Executive Chairman & CEO of Korea Zinc, said that we aim to boost copper output to 150,000 tons by 2028. He emphasized his determination to become a leading player in the global transition to renewable energy through new businesses such as resource recycling. Korea Zinc plans to significantly expand its output via the 'urban mining industry,' which involves extracting and selling metals from industrial waste and discarded home appliances. He highlighted, 'Urban mining not only offers higher profitability with 100% recyclability of copper but also presents a more sustainable approach to copper production.   In particular, "In terms of urban mining, the best mines are with the best cities and the most advanced cities," and emphasized, "That is why the United States is a good place for urban mining business.” Meanwhile, Korea Zinc operates several businesses in the United States that recycle waste such as electronics, automobile parts, solar panels, and batteries while extracting copper, silver, nickel, cobalt, and lithium. In April of 2024, it also acquired a scrap metal trading company.

‘Mineral’ plays a role in helping us to live more convenient and better lives. However, before non-ferrous metals can reach our lives, beneficiation and refining processes are required to extract the target metal and remove impurities since their mineral grades are low. So, do we have facilities in Korea producing high-purity metals? One representative example is Korea Zinc, established in 1974 and has grown into a world-leading smelting company based on Onsan refinery. In particular, Korea Zinc's electrolysis technology stands as one of the oldest and most used, with its zinc electrolysis plant boasting the largest production capacity globally among single refineries.

Korea Zinc and LG Chem team up for a new recycling business in the U.S. On March 14th, Korea Zinc joined hands with LG Chem to solve waste resource environmental problems and accelerate ESG management. The two companies signed a MOU regarding the project to build a resource circulation system through the U.S. waste plastics recycling market. Through this MOU, both companies plan to share market and policy trends using the U.S. recycling network and establish a resource circulation system (closed-loop) by promoting waste plastic recycling projects. This agreement was necessary in establishing major policy trends and regulatory response strategies related to waste and recycling, as well as technical cooperation such as Korea Zinc's e-waste treatment technology and LG Chem's quality improvement of waste plastic recycling products. Sang-Geun Lee, head of Korea Zinc’s Strategies & Planning division, said “This business agreement will have a significant impact on expanding Korea Zinc’s resource recycling business,” and added “The competitiveness of the resource recycling business, one of Korea Zinc's Troika Drive initiative, will further enhance."
