Partner with communities and develop leaders to build a better world.

About us

Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) is a nonprofit humanitarian organization established to support community-driven development programs worldwide through partnerships that design and implement sustainable engineering projects, while providing transformative experiences that enrich global perspectives and create responsible leaders. Today, more than two billion people lack access to the most basic things—clean drinking water, adequate sanitation, reliable passage to local markets and more. EWB-USA’s vision is a world in which the communities they serve have the capacity to sustainably meet their basic human needs. EWB-USA members are in remote corners of the world right now working hard to make EWB-USA’s vision a reality. As a result of EWB-USA’s ongoing projects, children can cross sturdy bridges to attend school, local clinics have consistent supplies of electricity, and accessing clean water isn’t a full-day chore for families. EWB-USA’s vision is ambitious but achievable and everyone has an important role to play—including you. Every contribution to their cause helps EWB-USA engineer a better world. Giving back is a passion at BC. We support our employees as they drive positive change for communities by partnering with organizations like Engineers Without Borders. Meet three inspiring leaders who strive to make an impact. https://ow.ly/2rzN50T1CGn Rwanda & Gambia For nearly a decade, Process Mechanical Engineer Katie Byrnes, PE, has worked on water storage, supply, and access projects in Rwanda and Gambia to eliminate the hours-long daily walks for water, which often falls on women and children. Katie began with EWB-Miami University Chapter as a student mentor, providing technical support. “Having access to an engineering education has given me skills that can change lives for the better. My time volunteering with EWB has allowed me to build relationships with people from completely different backgrounds and lives, helping the world to feel more connected and a lot smaller in the best way possible.” Peru Like Katie, Environmental Engineer Zach Dobroth’s volunteer work with EWB goes back to 2014. His project is in the remote Amazon basin community of Villa America , Peru. Although there are nearby water sources, contamination issues often left the local Yanesha tribe ill. Through his leadership roles on EWB Treasure Valley Professional Chapter, Zach has been able to support sending a team to work on an enclosed groundwater well and pump, solar panel array and electrical building, and storage tanks, pipelines, and taps. “The EWB model feels like a win for everyone. The communities get engineering solutions that make their lives better of course, but the process also develops leaders and problem-solvers.” Bolivia, Miramar & Nepal Environmental Engineer Itzé (Ally) Kenney, E.I., began her volunteer journey as a student with the EWB-University of South Florida Student Chapter, traveling to Bolivia’s Teneria Manzanani in 2018 to help prepare the farming community for essential sanitation facilities. Last year, Ally went to Miramar in the Dominican Republic to bring clean water into homes. Now, with the EWB Florida Professional Chapter, she is planning on going to Khabari, Nepal, to work on reliable access to clean water and distribution system. “These projects absolutely require you to develop the ability to meet someone where they are at and work from an empathetic standpoint.” Learn more about BC’s sustainability programs and #JoinTeamBC: https://ow.ly/2rzN50T1CGn #EWBUSA #PowerThroughPartnership #water #sustainability #infrastructure

  • World Water Week is a global reminder of the critical importance of clean water and sanitation. Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and essential for sustainable development, health, and economic growth. 💧 At EWB-USA, we're proud to have completed 619 water projects to date, helping 2.8 million people improve their access to clean water. Our work focuses on designing and implementing sustainable water solutions that meet the unique needs of communities around the world. 🌎 To learn more about World Water Week and the importance of water access, visit our blog: https://lnkd.in/gvk6NjHt

  • The impacts of industrialization and climate change disproportionately affect marginalized and underserved communities. Building climate-resilient infrastructure in these areas is crucial to address this urgent issue. 🌲 We believe that collaboration is key to creating lasting change. As we work alongside communities to build a more sustainable future, a better world for everyone is built. Let’s work together to create a more equitable and resilient world. Want to learn more about our work in climate resilience? Check out our engineering climate resilience page. 🌿

  • By implementing the first stages of the water supply system, we're bringing clean water one step closer to reality for countless people. Thank you for the hard work and dedication of the Engineers Without Borders New York team, partnering with the Kibingo community to create a resilient future! Check out some photos from their trip below. 💦

June 2024 was a month I will remember for the rest of my life. Although, I do hope I remember all months in my life, I know this one will particularly stand out. The Engineers Without Borders New York Kibingo Project team finally implemented a water storage project in Western Rwanda. This spring-fed gravity water storage system will increase potable water access year-round for over 1,000 Kibingo residents. As part of this project, we hired a Rwandan contractor to redevelop the existing spring source and provide source protection to ensure no runoff will infiltrate into the spring source. The project used only Rwandan materials and labor local to the community. We are super proud of this project and are very excited to start on our next project in the community: providing rainwater catchment systems to the local school. I am always looking for new volunteers and new donors (shameless fundraising plug) for the Kibingo project, so please reach out if you are interested! • Feeling overwhelmed by the world’s problems? You're not alone. Many of us start with big dreams to change the world but question our ability to make a real impact. Lydia El-Sayegh, an EWB-USA Executive Fellow, started their journey to make a difference as a student. But, it was their experience with EWB in Malawi that truly ignited their passion. Witnessing the impact of an EWB-USA project firsthand taught Lydia the incredible power of collaboration and determination. By combining passion, expertise, and community, we’re turning challenges into opportunities. 🙌 Want to learn more about Lydia's story? Check out our annual report below for their story and more! Together, we can build a better future.❤️ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e3Y5Fnt2

  • If you haven't had a chance, check out the below documentary showcasing an exciting inside look into the Engineers Without Borders USA FL Professionals' trip to Nepal where they worked with the community of Khabari to build a lasting water infrastructure. 💧

Khabari, a rural village situated far from another municipality, has long suffered from a lack of infrastructural development and basic amenities. Historically, the residents relied on river water and streams to fulfill their water requirements. However, as the population grew, these resources became increasingly polluted and unsuitable for consumption. The situation worsens during the rainy season when the water becomes completely unusable. Conversely, in the dry season, the water sources dry up, leaving the community without a nearby water supply. Check out this incredible video highlighting EWB-FLs recent assessment trip to Nepal to gather information about the Khabari village and coordinate with the local community Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) on solutions for Khabari's water scarcity and sanitation concerns. In close coordination with local community NGOs, EWB-FL is engaging local contractors to conduct surveys, water quality assessments, and transmissivity tests. This collaborative approach ensures the active involvement and empowerment of the community members. In the meantime, EWB-FL is exploring alternative solutions to address the water scarcity and sanitation issues in Khabari. #ewb #ewbfl #ewbusa #engineerswithoutborders #watersupply #waterengineering #nepal #engineering #waterengineering #watersanitation #watersupply
