Ahead of its time or past its prime? The first exclusively “drive-through” #urgentcare closed after one year in business. Founded by a company that had set up drive-through tents to test and vaccinate four million people for #covid19, this new concept would offer “full-service urgent care, fast-food style.” According to 11Alive News, patients seeking care for common conditions like strep or #influenza could present in their cars, be examined, tested, treated, and leave with prescription in hand in approximately 15 minutes. But because this is a “full-service” urgent care, patients requiring x-rays or a procedure like abscess incision and drainage, would park and come into the building. Having been a part of the original “dot com boom,” I experienced the conundrum of "technology that solves a business problem" versus a "technology solution looking for a problem to solve.” What #patientexperience pain points did this model resolve? And is a drive-through the best solution for those problems? If it’s solving for wait time, could that perhaps be better managed by a dynamic queuing system with “virtual waiting room” that enables patients to wait at home, being notified when it's time to head to the clinic? Drive-through testing and vaccination was a necessity during the pandemic due to social distancing and cleaning standards but outside of those conditions is it consumer behavior and what do #nursepractitioners and #medicalassisting think of working outside? Atlanta can have extremes in weather. What’s accomplished by an in-car exam versus, say, a #telemedicine encounter? BTW…I’m not sure this was the “first” drive-through care model as I’m aware of others in Michigan and 26 minutes across Atlanta, the local Atlanta news reported in December a competing drive-through provider (see comments) was seeing up to 20 patients per hour in December. So we shouldn’t assume it was the business model alone...it could have been site selection or any of the 25 other challenges #startups commonly face. Regardless, innovation in a field as entrenched as health care can result in many “strike outs” before hitting a “home run.” Progress is made as #entrepreneurs continue going to bat. Thank you, gentlemen, for thinking outside the box and moving the ball forward in "consumer-driven healthcare."
