On Saturday, July 27, 2024, I had the utmost pleasure of presenting at Feivel Justice Initiative's Civic Rights Webinar. Extensively researching the proposed topic "Prisoner's Rights" elucidated a topic that is as pertinent as it is ignored in contemporary conversations today. I hope the presentation attached below informs and inspires you to use your voice and platform to fight for the protection and enforcement of inmates' rights in Nigeria. I'm immensely grateful to Ene Esther Ali, Esq, the Executive Director of Feivel Justice Initiative, for trusting me with such a sensitive topic.

EMPOWER YOUR VOICE: STAND UP FOR CIVIC RIGHTS AND SHAPE THE FUTURE. In a world where the voices of individuals can lead to transformative change, understanding and exercising civic rights becomes crucial. Civic rights encompass the essential freedoms and responsibilities that allow citizens to participate fully in the political and social life of their communities. These rights are foundational to democracy and empower individuals to influence the direction of their societies. 📍Why Civic Rights Matter Civic rights, such as the right to vote, freedom of expression, assembly, and association, are more than mere legal entitlements—they are the lifeblood of democratic engagement. When citizens actively participate in the democratic process, they contribute to the creation of laws and policies that reflect the will and needs of the people. This participation is not only a right but a civic duty, helping to ensure that governments remain accountable and responsive. 📍The Power of Your Voice Every individual's voice counts in shaping the future. By understanding your civic rights and responsibilities, you can: 1. Influence Policy and Legislation: Active civic engagement allows you to advocate for policies that align with your values and address community needs. Whether through voting, petitioning, or participating in public consultations, your input can shape the legislative landscape. 2. Promote Accountability and Transparency: Civic rights empower citizens to hold leaders and institutions accountable. By staying informed and voicing concerns, you help ensure that those in power act in the public's best interest. 3. Strengthen Community Bonds: Civic participation fosters a sense of community and shared purpose. It brings people together to address common challenges and work towards collective goals, creating a more cohesive and resilient society. 4. Protect and Expand Rights: By advocating for civic rights, individuals help protect existing freedoms and work towards expanding rights to marginalized and underrepresented groups, promoting inclusivity and equity. We invite you to join us on Saturday for an enlightening discussion on civic rights with Fache Taofiq Abubakar. This session will delve into the significance of civic rights, the current challenges and opportunities in civic engagement, and practical ways to empower your voice in the public sphere. 📍FJI Civic Rights Webinar Date: Saturday, July 27 Time: 6:00 – 9:00 PM Google Meet joining info: https://lnkd.in/dni-4YzV Don't miss this chance to gain valuable knowledge and be part of a vibrant conversation about shaping the future of our society. EXPLORING PRISONERS' RIGHTS: A MATTER OF HUMAN DIGNITY Have you heard that prisoners have rights too? It's a fundamental aspect of human rights and justice systems worldwide that individuals, regardless of their incarceration status, retain certain rights. Recognizing these rights is crucial in maintaining a fair and humane society. 📌The Inherent Dignity of All Individuals Did you know that all prisoners deserve to be treated with respect, acknowledging their inherent dignity and value as human beings? This principle is rooted in international human rights standards, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. These documents affirm that human rights are inalienable and apply to all people, including those in custody. ✍️Key Rights of Prisoners 1. Right to Humane Treatment: Prisoners are entitled to be treated humanely and with respect. This includes protection from torture, cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. 2. Right to Access to Justice: Prisoners have the right to fair legal representation and to challenge their detention's legality. They should have access to legal counsel and be able to participate in their defense. 3. Right to Health Care: Incarceration should not deprive individuals of access to necessary medical care. Prisons are obligated to provide adequate healthcare, including mental health services. 4. Right to Maintain Family Ties: Prisoners should be allowed reasonable opportunities to maintain contact with family and friends. This helps preserve their social ties and can aid in rehabilitation and reintegration. 5. Right to Participate in Rehabilitation Programs: Access to education, vocational training, and rehabilitation programs is crucial for preparing inmates for a successful reintegration into society. Ensuring that prisoners' rights are respected is not only a legal obligation but also a moral imperative. It reflects our collective commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law. By upholding these rights, we recognize that individuals can change and that the purpose of incarceration includes rehabilitation and reintegration into society. We invite you to join us this Saturday as we explore and clarify these important issues together with Barrister Imoter Kpengwa. This discussion aims to deepen our understanding of prisoners' rights and the broader implications for our justice system and society. 📍FJI Civic Rights Webinar Date: Saturday, July 27 Time: 6:00 – 9:00 PM Google Meet joining info: https://lnkd.in/dni-4YzV Your participation will contribute to a vital conversation about human rights, dignity, and justice. We look forward to your insights and engagement on this critical topic. #prisonrights #humanrights #prisonersrights #feiveljusticeinitiative

DAY 17: UNLAWFUL ARREST AND DETENTION IN NIGERIA Unlawful arrest and detention occur when individuals are held without legal justification or due process. It's crucial to be aware of your rights and ensure they are not violated. Here's what you need to know: Guaranteed Right: The Nigerian Constitution (Section 35) guarantees protection against unlawful arrest and detention. Time Limits: Police must bring a suspect before a court within 24 hours (ideally) or 48 hours maximum. Exceeding this time frame constitutes unlawful detention. Reason for Arrest: There must be probable cause for an arrest, and proper procedures must be followed. Arrests for civil wrongs or based on malice are unlawful. Stand up for your rights and ensure justice is upheld! #CivicRights #JusticeForAll #KnowYourRights #LegalAwareness #FeivelJustice Connect with us @FeivelJustice for more updates and information on protecting your rights!
