Standing here, with the iconic YC sign, we can't help but feel a surge of excitement and gratitude. It's a moment that symbolizes a new chapter for Fileforge - one filled with opportunities, learning, and growth.

Not all PDFs are created equal. If you rely on PDFs to archive sensitive matters, you need to pay attention to the PDF format you are using. But wait there are multiple PDF formats? PDF/A, PDF/E, PDF/UA, PDF/VT, PDF/X, are different extensions to the PDF format that either expand or restrict the PDF capabilities. So what does it have to do with archiving? A regular PDF file can embed links to image, fonts, and other resources. Over time, these links may become obsolete. When they become obsolete, the contents of the PDF file can no longer be displayed correctly, leading to a loss of information or wrong information altogether. In PDF/A, resources need to be embedded into the file. That means when you open the file in 10 years, you will see the exact same contents as today. PDF/A as in Archive. Easy to remember!

Today, one of our first customers Mainak Mukherjee launched a new version of PDFTernity 🚀, a tool to help job seekers generate professional looking resumes easily. The relationship between a company and its customers must be symbiotic. Each gives one another value, taking various forms. While the usage of PDFTernity is not huge by any means – and we hope it'll soon be! – there is a lot of value to be taken in chatting and connecting with fellow users. Coming with a strange use case for dark mode PDFs, we had to leverage a few tricks to make this happen. And this ultimately made Fileforge more reliable and extensible for all our customers. As a technical founder, you need to take the best decisions for your startup. This performance trace told us we needed to change. Here is why. When we pivoted away from Codemuse, we needed to launch fast - and at that time, going serverless was our best bet. Fast-forward a few weeks, and this had become our user's first pain point. The API was slow. There are a few key elements you need to watch out for: - Get to the bottom of your bottlenecks to identify the root cause of bad performance. - Plan for incremental changes rather than a full-blown rewrite where possible, - Monitor before and after to get quantifiable insights. Using Sentry we quickly identified the root cause cause of our performance issues to the distributed nature of our architecture. What allowed us to move fast by leveraging Vercel and Supabase came to bite us back. Latency was key. At Fileforge we work with files, and this latency added up to an unbearable amount. I took the decision to move our API services away from Vercel. One may think it is a bad decision, and it may be for most APIs and products. But for us, this is what made most sense. We went from prioritising development speed to end-user speed. Objectives may change, be ready to move. Always do what's best for your business.
