Indigenous youth represent the largest fastest growing population in Canada and a cornerstone of our future. At the #FNMPC2024 Conference, we were privileged to hear directly from a panel of young Indigenous leaders, gaining insights into their lived experiences and the future they aspire to create. SIRGE Coalition is attending the 17th OECD - OCDE Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains in Paris this month! Join us for the partner-led session: Operationalizing Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) across Transition Mineral Supply Chains on Friday, May 24th from 9am-10:30am. Despite significant global normative progress, the proper implementation of FPIC at mining sites continues to be a challenge. This workshop will introduce new guidance materials on FPIC, including relevant resources for identifying Indigenous Peoples globally and an initial set of commonly asked questions and answers to help investors and purchasers of mined materials strengthen their independent due diligence related to FPIC. 🚨A call to halt 'Biodiversity Offsetting' and the scaling of biodiversity credits through regulation🚨 Recently, it seems there is a push to lobby governments to scale biodiversity credit markets through regulation, which is very problematic. Therefore, I have drafted this document below, outlining why governments should desist from doing so: 1. Regulation needs to focus not on market interests, but rather, on conservation objectives and the public interest. Introducing regulation because of lobbying by actors with vested interests does not make sense from a conservation perspective. 2. Biodiversity offsets have been proven to be ineffective by research, with two thirds of biodiversity offset policies failing to meet their goals. 3. Scaling biodiversity markets through regulation would lead to an artificial demand and speculation of Indigenous lands, including land-grabbing, because they lack legal protection and communal land title in most places. 4. While several initiatives have stressed the need for Indigenous leadership in developing biodiversity markets, the process of engaging Indigenous Peoples has thus far not facilitated Indigenous Peoples' broad, effective and informed participation in decision-making. In light of above, States and other stakeholders should (inter alia): 1. Adopt a moratorium on the development on biodiversity credits or offsets in the context of the Global Biodiversity Framework, including in forums such as UNEA, G7, G20, CBD COP16, etc, as well as national Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, or other policy, law, and regulation. 2. Prioritize direct funding to Indigenous Peoples to achieve conservation and protection objectives and outcomes. 3. Bodies like the Biodiversity Credit Alliance and the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits should explicitly state in their recommendations that biodiversity credits should remain fully voluntary. 4. A ban on international or cross-ecosystem or otherwise distant biodiversity offsetting mechanisms or claims. 5. Adoption of biodiversity no-go zones as part of environmental permitting processes and bank policies, rather than biodiversity offsetting requirements. 6. Companies that violate human rights, including Indigenous rights or that have insufficient policies to respect Indigenous rights should be excluded from biodiversity markets.
