Storytelling is one of the most effective ways to fight mental health stigma in BIPOC communities. When people who live with a mental health condition share their stories, it can help others feel less alone and reduce shame. #BIPOCMentalHealth

“In my work, I like that I can provide care for young children,” Isabel says. “In my child care home, kids come here to learn and grow.” At her home-based child care business in Santa Clara County, Isabel cares for children and helps them explore their world through play and educational activities. Isabel, an early educator with 22 years of experience in the field, sets an example for the impact and need of early educators in our county. She provides nurturing spaces where young children can be curious, make friends, and learn. Her business is crucial in supporting the early development and well-being of children.

Playing and learning is a sensory, multicultural experience at Ajelandra's child care center. “I love spending time with young children because I get to teach them words in Spanish,” she says. “Introducing them to a language they do not speak at home is fulfilling.” From helping young children learn to walk to teaching them new words and languages, Alejandra, an early educator in Santa Clara County, does it all. When young children learn new languages, their brains grow! By fostering these bilingual experiences in a nurturing environment, Alejandra gives young children essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

We had a wonderful time at the Celebrating Women’s Strength and Success event with CalWORKS in San Jose. Families and individuals picked up resources about local services, parenting programs, and more from organizations around Santa Clara County. Events like these that offer ongoing access to resources helps to strengthen families and support individuals in the community.

From parenting workshops and system navigation to music and movement classes and connecting families to supportive services, the FRCs have created strong networks and supportive community systems. Their work has been and will continue to be essential for the well-being of families and young children.

We got a first look at the new Exploration Portal at the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose! This outdoor space features eight exhibit stations where children and their families can discover the patterns, symmetry, and proportion found in nature. The portal opens to the public on Saturday, June 29.

Congratulations to De Colores Collective! This Latina-led and owned cooperative recently launched in Santa Clara County. Last week, they celebrated the launch with community members, FIRST 5, and many others. We are excited to partner with them in their work, which focuses on creating social change by uniting people and communities.

We joined the CHAC to celebrate and honor their legacy of supporting the community's mental and behavioral health needs. Community Health Awareness Council (CHAC) staff and volunteers have supported children, families, and parents for many years. Their work has made a difference in the lives of young children and families in Santa Clara County. After nearly 50 years, CHAC will soon transition its services to Pacific Clinics, a local behavioral health provider that will provide similar health services to the community.
