We're calling on The College Board to stand against the blatant racism that is happening in Florida by making AP African American Studies available online, so that every student & teacher can access it, regardless of where they live. ICYMI: Last summer, the College Board announced a new course, AP African American Studies, that would be piloted by 60 teachers during the 2022/23 school year, and the first exam would take place in May 2025. However, last week the State of Florida rejected AP African American Studies. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that the course “lacks educational value.” This is the first time an entire AP class has been censored in a state. We're not surprised by this political stunt. White supremacists will always try to limit access to information because empowered groups of people will upend oppressive systems. But Governor DeSantis knows that AP African American Studies is so valuable that it could jeopardize his power. This is why we believe that the College Board, the creators and administrators of AP exams, should make the AP African American Studies course available online, for every student and teacher to access. At Fiveable, we know that prioritizing the well-being of our team makes us a better company. That's why, every 4th Friday of the month, we close our office doors and dedicate the entire day to Wellness. Two years ago, we realized that many of our team members weren't taking much-needed personal time off. When we asked why, the answers were consistent: the mental load of preparing for time off and playing catch-up after returning was was not worth the actual vacation. So we thought, "What if we could offer everyone some time where that mental load didn't exist?" In January 2022, we introduced Wellness Days, and it is by far our most popular company benefit. Our team uses this time to connect with loved ones, explore the great outdoors, get creative with crafts, pamper themselves with massages, or simply catch up on some quality rest and TV.
