Philanthropy is embodying a powerful shift: ❌From being at the center of social change efforts ➡️ To working in close partnership with the broader ecosystem of stakeholders necessary to sustain lasting change. In our latest piece, Chris Carlson, Neyat D., John Harper, and Fay Hanleybrown describe how funders are increasingly acting as a facilitator, connector, and learner in a larger ecosystem of actors working to create lasting, systems-level change. They share rich examples and stories from many funders in our community including: Natrona Collective Health Trust, Texoma Health Foundation, Houston Endowment, Danville Regional Foundation, Greater Washington Community Foundation, The California Endowment, Headwaters Foundation, and the Katz Amsterdam Foundation. Love seeing these photos of Collective Impact Forum’s Courtney Williams Robertson speaking at the closing keynote of Meals on Wheels America’s 50th Anniversary conference! 🤩
Thanks to Meals on Wheels America for inviting me to be the closing keynote speaker for their 50th Anniversary Conference & Expo last week in Baltimore, MD to speak about the importance of building powerful partnerships and collaborations! Not only did I speak but I was also able to attend the conference in its entirety and what a treat! The work that is happening across this nation in service to our aging population and those experiencing challenges with access to quality, nutritious meals is mind blowing. A special shout out to Sharron Corle, Carter Florence, and the President and CEO Ellie Hollander (pictured), who is a true delight and fierce advocate for our aging population! I encourage everyone to get involved with and donate to your local Meals on Wheels program! FSG Collective Impact Forum #Collaboration #Partnerships #Access #Opportunity

Love seeing these photos from FSG CEO John Harper’s keynote at the #UNITE2024 Conference! 📷 It was a pleasure to learn and collaborate with everyone at Arizona's largest conference for philanthropic and nonprofit professionals. In his keynote, John shared why traditional approaches to social impact are not solving our world’s most complex challenges and how systems thinking can help highlight the often implicit conditions holding problems in place. Mindflower Studio, LLC captured these beautiful Sketch Notes which share some of the highlights of John’s keynote and breakout session on systems change. A big thank you to Vitalyst Health Foundation and AZ Impact for Good for creating this opportunity to demystify systems change!

Yesterday, we co-hosted an incredible discussion with Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) on how philanthropy can shift power and support the power of social change ecosystems. 👏 GEO CEO & President Marcus Walton skillfully moderated a rich conversation with FSG’s John Harper, Jessica Kaczmarek of The James Irvine Foundation, and Joshua Hearne of the Danville Regional Foundation. The discussion was rich and nourishing, and as Marcus aptly put it—much like the slow cooking needed to make a good soup. 👨🍳🍽️ We kicked off the event by asking the audience to reflect on their own local ecosystem, and it was exciting to witness the myriad potential for cross-sectoral collaboration in their responses. Some quotables from the conversation: 💭 “I know you've all been to a meeting where you talked about what's wrong in a place that you love. And then everybody went home after that meeting . . . and nothing happened right. Because you can’t build anything on a deficit.” - Joshua Hearne 💭 “Collaboration doesn’t just happen by osmosis. How are you facilitating and incentivizing these spaces for folks to actually come together? Let’s get honest about actually resourcing this work.” - John Harper 💭 “As a foundation, we can listen to each of the the different components of the ecosystem . . . and create space for them to listen to each other. What we have tried to do is be a bridge builder and a facilitator again, not trying to push an agenda.” - Jessica Kaczmarek Huge thanks to all our panelists for all their incredible words of wisdom! ❤️ #philanthropy #socialimpact #collaboration

FSG reposted this
Talking about systems change can get theoretical and academic. We realized we had to make it more digestible. That’s why we were so glad John Harper of FSG was at today’s AZ Impact for Good UNITE Conference to help clarify what systems change means during the lunch keynote and subsequent breakout session. #SystemsChange #SystemsThinking
