We're excited to be featured in the recent FDA Updates Food Traceability Resources announcement. The FDA is partnering with the FSPCA to develop the core training curriculum for the food industry on the Food Traceability Rule. We've established an editorial team that includes subject matter experts from the FDA, industry, and academia. This team is working to create training materials and exercises to help food industry personnel understand the FDA’s Food Traceability Rule requirements. Training is anticipated to be available by mid-2025. The FDA Food Traceability Rule is a significant step towards improving food safety by enhancing the traceability of high-risk foods. We are thrilled to announce that Glenn Bass will be presenting an FDA perspective on human food at the 2024 FSPCA Annual Conference. Bass serves as the Deputy Program Director of the Office of Human and Animal Food Operations (OHAFO), West in the Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA) at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Tuesday breakout session will provide the food safety community with an inside look at the FDA’s implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Glenn Bass has been a pivotal figure at the FDA since 2001. Currently, he oversees all domestic and foreign field investigatory operations related to foods and feed regulated by the FDA. He acts as the central point within the agency for directorates and other headquarters offices to obtain field support services for food and feed activities. Additionally, he coordinates, directs, and assists both field and headquarters offices with investigative food and feed activities. The 2024 FSPCA Annual Conference is a premier platform where U.S. regulatory officials, global food industry leaders, academia, and food safety experts converge. We have only three openings left for the virtual FSPCA Intentional Adulteration Vulnerability Assessment Combination Course on August 6-7 and August 13-14. Registration closes on July 15. This course provides participants with the knowledge and tools needed to perform the duties of an IAVA Lead Instructor. It follows the standardized training curriculum that the FDA considers adequate for meeting the requirements of a "food defense qualified individual" conducting a vulnerability assessment under the IA rule. The course helps the food industry prevent intentional adulteration, including acts of terrorism targeting the food supply. The combination course allows you to experience the course as a participant and then be trained as a Lead Instructor to deliver the FSPCA Intentional Adulteration Vulnerability Assessment participant course to others. The FSPCA Quarterly Newsletter is hot off the press. Here are some notes from Jason Wan, Ph.D., FSPCA Director, Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH): "I am very pleased to report that FSPCA has made many significant advancements in the past three months on key initiatives that are important for the FSPCA community. The Preventive Controls for Human Food (PCHF) Version 2.0 standardized curriculum has been reviewed by FDA. A virtual pilot Lead Instructor Refresher training course for PCHF Version 2.0 is scheduled for July, and virtual deliveries of Lead Instructor Refresher training courses will follow in August/September. In the meantime, the updated FSPCA Human Food Lead Instructor application portal is live now to accept new Human Food Lead Instructor applications, and a PCHF Version 2.0 Lead Instructor course is scheduled for October. The month of June also saw our FSPCA community supporting the June 7th World Food Safety Day, and a successful virtual delivery of a Preventive Controls for Animal Food Lead Instructor course. The FSPCA Annual Conference Work Group has developed an excellent conference program, and the registration website is now open for early-bird registrations. In addition, with the support from the FSPCA Executive Advisory Board, Committees, and Work Groups, FSPCA has developed a strategic plan to articulate the strategic goals in achieving FSPCA‘s vision and mission.
