Join our team at the NAPCO Conference on Monday, August 26, from 1:25 PM to 1:55 PM for a session on leveraging AI to advance justice. The use of AI in the justice system has been a topic of increasing interest. From case management tools to algorithms that enhance legal research, AI has been quietly supporting the system for years. The latest innovation in this digital transformation is AI-powered speech-to-text technology, built on advanced digital recording. These technologies are key to upholding the commitment to efficient and fair justice. Our session will dispel common misconceptions and highlight how these tools are already addressing the stenographer shortage and improving the judicial process.

The Los Angeles Superior Court recently launched a dashboard to share data on the ongoing court reporter shortage. Despite extensive recruitment efforts and incentives for court reporters, the workforce has continued to decline, creating a "constitutional crisis" for the justice system.  Due to the Los Angeles court reporter shortage, more than 525,000 court proceedings that occurred between January 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024 were left without a record.  The Los Angeles Superior Court notes, "Verbatim records of court proceedings are critical to ensuring all litigants are afforded due process in their cases. The absence of a verbatim record makes it nearly impossible for an individual to appeal their case."  View the data here https://lnkd.in/gF7_wNXm

We recently had the privilege of presenting at the NACM - National Association for Court Management Annual Conference. In our session, we challenged prevailing views on AI in the justice system and demonstrated how speech-to-text technology can help address the growing stenographer shortage, while offering more than just a record. Critics argue that digital recording and speech-to-text systems struggle with the complexities of a courtroom, such as background noise and overtalk. They note, unlike human stenographers, these technologies can't interrupt proceedings to clarify what has been said. In a short snippet of our presentation, For The Record CEO Tony Douglass, along with Tim Jackson, Senior Director – Partnerships & Customer Success, and Steve Zinone, Senior Director – Transcript Solutions, demonstrate the power of AI-based speech-to-text. Our system can differentiate between voices and produce a clear, uninterrupted draft transcript—even during overtalk. This enhances the efficiency of court proceedings by reducing delays, ultimately providing a more complete and reliable record that is accessible immediately. Watch below:

The Americans with Disabilities Act recently marked its 34th anniversary. When signing the act into law, President George H.W. Bush noted it “presents us all with an historic opportunity. It signals the end to the unjustified segregation and exclusion of persons with disabilities from the mainstream of American life.” When opportunities and resources are facilitated and implemented to ensure equitable access and increased comfort in complex environments—such as courtrooms—the positive impact on people with disabilities is profound. While acknowledging that significant progress is still needed, the anniversary offers a chance to reflect on the advancements that foster a more inclusive and accessible justice system. To find out more on how we are facilitating inclusive and automatic assistance for people with disabilities or for those who need additional accommodations, our team would be more than happy to connect with you at [email protected].

Further enhancements to FTR Justice Cloud are set to be released, with the addition of an annotations feature. In this initial release, users can annotate FTR RealTime recordings with case information, including marking hearing start and end times and linking hearings with specific cases. This allows for quick access to hearing times in a recording from the new timeline view, the ability to browse cases and view all associated hearings, and the ability to search for hearings and cases throughout the court system. In upcoming releases, we'll be adding new features to simplify the process of adding hearing annotations, as well as introducing new types of annotations. For more information on annotating recordings with case information, view the full release note here: https://lnkd.in/g4VXaqVd Subscribe to the release notes to stay informed on upcoming updates.
