Balance can be a problem for a lot of people so instead of going right to a single-leg stance or an unstable environment simply create a weight shift. By raising one foot on a stool or block you are putting more weight on the down leg, this is a great place to start. Add breathing and rotations to increase the difficulty as well as change the foot position to a more narrow base or higher elevation. These simple things may be a better way to lead into single-leg activities.

Don't Let the Medical Diagnosis Drive the Boat

The language of movement is written in feel. -Gray Cook Fitness can be defined in the same way—the independent, sustainable, and developmental way to continually adapt. Adaptation is what we do when we become fit, and the adaptation definition must involve much greater scrutiny of the environment. To meet the minimums of health, you have to be a living, breathing, eating, drinking, and sleeping being who can move. If you can move through a fundamental set of patterns, you can start to learn from your environment. You are the most complex and accomplished movement learning system we have ever known. The entire system is jump-started with fundamental movement patterns that establish movement literacy. Movement literacy, in turn, is the foundation of skill acquisition.

It is always good to identify an exercise or activity that can target a lot of areas at once. This side site activity works to improve upper body and lower body mobility. It will further work to improve hip mobility by adding internal and external rotation in this position. However, as with any exercise recommendation use the results from your screen or assessment to determine if it is useful or not, doing an exercise on someone who doesn't need it is a waste of time and we all know how valuable time is.
