Born in Detroit, MI, Mayor Duggan has spent his entire career working in the city to solve some of the most complex issues facing Detroiters, including the City's census undercounts. Majority-Black Detroit was the largest U.S. city to dispute its 2020 census count, following a national head count in which the U.S. Census Bureau acknowledged that a higher percentage of African Americans were undercounted than last decade. Detroit has faced challenges in achieving an accurate count of its Black residents, among other populations, for decades. In honor of Women's History Month, FCCP would like to highlight U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, and the incredible work she is doing in the fight to expand and uphold women's rights! Senator Duckworth is the first Thai-American woman elected to Congress, the first woman with a disability elected to Congress, and the first senator to give birth while serving in office! Senator Duckworth is a relentless advocate in protecting the right for Americans to access the reproductive healthcare they need. Last year, Senator Duckworth helped introduce the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2023, which would guarantee access to abortion everywhere across the U.S. and restore the right to comprehensive reproductive healthcare for millions of Americans. Last month, FCCP Executive Director LaShanda A. Jackson, MBA and FCCP Director of Strategy and External Relations Anita Banerji, had the opportunity to meet Senator Duckworth and discuss ways in which we can continue our collective advocacy around issues at the intersection of democracy and reproductive justice.
