Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) is a 501c3 educational organization centered around our mission to promote, encourage, and sustain student interest in careers across all functional areas in insurance, risk management and actuarial science. With a growing network of 5,000 students and 35,000 alumni from 147 colleges and universities throughout North America, Gamma Iota Sigma leads the sustainable growth and diversification of the industry’s student talent pipeline. GIS members benefit from world-class programs, innovative partnerships, critical industry support, expansive campus engagement, and an unrivaled lifelong professional network. Incorporated in 1965, GIS has over 50 years of experience engaging students and preparing them for careers in insurance, risk management and actuarial science. The Gamma Iota Sigma Foundation, established in 2022, serves a mission of ensuring equitable access to careers in insurance, risk management and actuarial science by lowering social and financial barriers for all students interested in industry careers through four key focus areas: Mental Wellness, Professional Development, Chapter Support and Accessibility. This mission aligns with Gamma Iota Sigma's vision of leveling the playing field so that all students, regardless of background, can pursue their desired career path, ultimately diversifying and sustaining our industry’s talent pipeline.

MEET Katelyn Batten: YEAR: Senior MAJOR: Finance with a Concentration in Risk Management and Insurance Title: Excess Personal Lines Underwriter Intern at Amwins ABOUT: I’m working with a team of 5 headed by an ECU RMI alum in the Morehead City NC office. I help assist my team place policies for agents that aren’t able to place them in the admitted market with carriers we have access to. I’ve been able to see several unique risks this summer including athletes, celebrities, and multi million dollar homes. I've had the opportunity to travel to the Amwins headquarters in Charlotte, NC and connect with fellow interns and participate in social events like happy hours and even a catamaran boat excursion. What do you like most about Amwins?: The people! Amwins shows that they genuinely cares about your future and what you want out of your career. My office is interested in what I want to learn and how they can help me achieve my career goals even while I’m an intern.
