Reputational damage from a high profile loss event is sometimes unavoidable, but how can we work together to reduce the more direct impact of offshore wind equipment failure? Fraser McLachlan, CEO at GCube, recently spoke with Timothy Ferry at Recharge highlighting that the Vineyard blade failure incident should serve as a wakeup call for the offshore wind industry that has “largely leaned on insurers over the years with regards to transferring as much risk as possible”. “There’s got to be a better degree of risk sharing all round and not everybody expecting one party to retain all of that risk, because that is not a sustainable model”. As discussed in GCube’s market insights report, “Vertical Limit”, we need more effective risk sharing among developers, manufacturers, and insurers. In doing so, we must take greater accountability for driving technological standardisation and investment in the supply chain.
