A week from today! Our next Trans Equity Training takes place at La Doña Cervecería, at 241 Fremont Ave N, Minneapolis. This training is co-hosted by B. Wilson, a Black, queer-trans artist, licensed educator, community member and event curator from Minneapolis’s Northside. Together we will be taking a deep dive into the ways that transphobic propaganda is used to further radical right wing agendas, and how this is impacting transgender athletes and sports. All genders, all allies welcome.

We're headed to the Minnesota Supreme Court. This is HUGE. JayCee Cooper is a transgender athlete who was denied the opportunity to compete simply because she is trans. Her case has the potential to overturn a 2001 Minnesota Supreme Court decision, Goins v. West Group, that allows discrimination against transgender people based on sex assigned at birth — in violation of the Minnesota Human Rights Act. As part of JayCee Cooper's legal team, along with co-counsel Nichols Kaster, PLLP and Premo Frank, we could not be more proud of her determination, her tenacity, and her strength. Her case has garnered the support of a powerful coalition of supporters, including the ACLU, Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA), Minnesota Department of Human Rights, National Employment Lawyers Association, OutFront Minnesota with Minnesota Lavender Bar Association, Transforming Families, and the National Women's Law Center on behalf of over 20 organizations including the Women's Sports Foundation, the National Organization for Women Foundation, and Lambda Legal. As Gender Justice legal director Jess Braverman says, "No one should be denied the opportunity to pursue their dreams and ambitions simply because of who they are." For more about JayCee Cooper's case and to read the amicus briefs in their entirety, follow this link: https://lnkd.in/gma4Ww5m

It's an idea whose time has come. And it's extremely popular across party lines. Reforming the judiciary could strengthen—maybe even save—democracy. In the latest podcast, Gender Justice special projects advisor Erin Maye Quade and staff attorney Christy Hall talk COURT REFORM with Alliance for Justice judiciary reform expert Hayley Durudogan. Former Gender Justice client Dave Edwards knows a thing or two about advocating for the rights of gender-expansive kids to get fair treatment at school: he and his wife, Hannah, came to Gender Justice for help when their transgender child experienced relentless bullying at school. His new book is a guide for educators — come celebrate the book launch on Tuesday, September 10 at Urban Growler, 2325 Endicott St., Saint Paul, MN 55114! Transforming Families is a community open to families who have transgender, non-binary and/or questioning children, offers a support system for those at any point in their child’s gender identity journey. Director Hannah Edwards says the best part of her job is being able to watch families thrive in their personal journeys. The group holds monthly meetings in four areas around the Twin Cities—Minneapolis, St. Paul, Eagan and Mahtomedi—with an online option as well. "We recently celebrated 50 years of Title IX and equity for women and girls in sports, but as with all laws, it’s only as good as its enforcement.” — Sara Jane Baldwin, Gender Justice Senior Staff Attorney A win for all Minneapolis Public Schools students — but it goes without saying that gender equity should not require such constant vigilance. See something that's just not right? Let us know — together we can help get results!

Meagan McIntyre has been an invaluable member of our legal team this summer—and we're thrilled that she plans to continue to put her skills and talents to work with Gender Justice this fall!
This summer Meagan McIntyre is a Human Rights Center fellow working with Gender Justice. Megan shares that the work has been been both challenging and deeply rewarding, and she has had the opportunity to work on cases that are not just about individual justice, but about setting legal precedents that will protect others from discrimination in the future. Megan has had the privilege of meeting with clients, drafting legal research memos, briefs, and advocacy letters, and engaging in a variety of projects that spanned issues such as discrimination based on sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation. She reflects that being part of a strategic impact litigation team allowed her to see how these legal efforts can drive systemic change and create a more just society.
