When a friend or family member makes a post on social media, do you ever question if it was actually them? Today's Friday Fraud Awareness highlights Social Media Hijacking, which involves a cybercriminal gaining access to another user's social media account. How do they grant access and what should you do to protect your accounts? 🔗 To hijack the account, an email or link is sent prompting the victim to enter their credentials on a fake login page. The cybercriminal then grants access, logs in, changes the password, and takes full control of the account. 🚩 Most often, criminals use the hijacked account to prey on the victim's followers by soliciting money for a fake investment, selling non-existent items, or encouraging them to participate in a giveaway. Keep yourself safe! 🚫 Never log in to social media via an emailed or texted link. Rather, log in directly on the social media app or website. 📞 If someone you follow makes a suspicious post or sends you a message, follow up with that person directly via text or phone. 💳 Don't send money, provide credit card information, or banking information over social media. Giveaways and fast-money opportunities asking for digital payment are almost always scams!

This month's Friday Fraud Awareness highlights fake check scams. This is a common scam tactic where fraudsters issue a check worth more than the amount owed and instruct you to wire the excess funds back to them. The victim soon finds that the check they received was fraudulent. Below are some variations of this scam and red flags to watch for! 🚩 Pay to Play Scam – There is no legitimate reason for someone to need money wired back to them in order to participate in an activity. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! 🚩 Counterfeit Checks – Scam artists are using sophisticated technology to mirror the appearance of legitimate checks. If you are in doubt, talk to your banker. Be sure to explain the source of the check, the reasons it was sent to you, and whether you are being asked to wire money back. 🚩 Easy Money Solicitation – Beware of social media posts or messages promising easy income or quick ways to earn cash. Just because someone contacted you doesn’t mean they are a trusted source. Find more information to help protect yourself and your finances: https://brev.is/UxYg0

Imposters are just what they sound like. Imposters are criminals, posing as someone else, who create fake websites or use email and text to convince you to send them money. Be smarter than these fraudsters. If you receive a suspicious notification that offers you a link to a website, don’t click. Double checking URLs for the correct spelling is always a good practice, as scammers set up sites with spelling that is closely aligned with legitimate websites. German American Bank and other reputable businesses have their sites verified and certified to ensure your experience is safe. Our website is www.germanamerican.com.
