Building sustainable, quality infrastructure investments in emerging markets.

About us

The Global Infrastructure Facility is a G20 initiative established to address the shortage of high quality, bankable sustainable infrastructure projects in emerging markets. Housed at the World Bank, GIF brings together governments, MDBs, developers, financiers, and other stakeholders in mobilizing private capital in infrastructure projects in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs). GIF helps EMDEs select, design, structure, and bring to market such projects. With a strong focus on sustainable infrastructure, GIF has achieved great success since its launch in 2014. GIF has a global portfolio with over 120 projects under preparation in 58 countries, spread across the transport, energy, social infrastructure, water & sanitation, and digital development sectors—with a total investment need of $74 billion. Through the GIF’s support, $50 billion of these are expected to be mobilized from private investments. GIF aims to deliver more than 200 sustainable infrastructure projects and mobilize in excess of $150 billion in additional investments between 2021 and 2027.

  • 🌍 GIF and PPIAF led a Climate Resilient PPP workshop in Himeji, Japan. Together, we delved into the critical need for resilient infrastructure amidst escalating climate impacts and explored effective ways to incentivize private sector participation in resilience through PPP planning and structuring. In the face of wildfires in California to typhoons in the Philippines and droughts in South Africa, the urgency of our mission to adapt existing infrastructure and build the resilient infrastructure of the future became clear. The workshop was attended by a number of government representatives and PPP practitioners. Throughout the sessions, GIF showcased innovative approaches and impactful projects, such as the Climate Toolkits implemented in Mozambique and Ghana, which integrate climate resilience into urban mobility and PPP frameworks. One more milestone in our journey towards building a sustainable future through public-private collaboration and innovation. Let's continue to push boundaries and create resilient infrastructure that stands the test of time. 🌱💡 #InfrastructureResilience #ClimateInnovation #PublicPrivatePartnerships

The Global Infrastructure Facility presented the Ho Chi Minh Low Carbon City Project at the Asia Infrastructure Forum (AIF). The Project envisions four initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate carbon credits: Rooftop Solar, Energy Efficiency, E-mobility, Smart LED street lighting. The Project is being prepared and led by The World Bank, with project preparation supported by the Global Infrastructure Facility and Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility (PPIAF). AIF 2024 is organized by the Infrastructure Asia, the Ministry of Finance (Singapore), Enterprise Singapore, and the Monetary Authority of Singapore, with The World Bank as the strategic partner. #AsiaInfrastructureForum #AIF2024 Jade Shu Yu Wong, Marc Forni

  • Our GIF Head, Astrid Manroth, had the privilege of representing our organization at the #EBRD’s2024AnnualMeeting in Yerevan, Armenia. With a focus on the challenges and opportunities for boosting infrastructure investment through innovative public-private partnerships (#PPPs), Astrid engaged in a lively discussion and shared her perspectives on the importance of supporting governments in preparing infrastructure PPPs to attract private investment and the opportunities of public-private partnerships, highlighting the excellent collaboration between the GIF, EBRD and private investors, e.g. in Uzbekistan. Another event that demonstrated the GIF’s commitment to fostering collaboration and driving positive change across emerging markets such as Europe and Central Asia. Many thanks to our technical partner EBRD for convening this important discussion! #EBRDAnnualMeeting #InfrastructureInvestment #PublicPrivatePartnerships

  • On April 16, 2024, the GIF held its semi-annual Advisory Council Meeting in Washington, DC which assembled the GIF’s public sector funding and technical partners and private sector advisory partners. The flagship event focused on exploring innovative ways to unlock private capital to implement the climate commitments of multilateral development banks (MDBs) for sustainable infrastructure development. For the last ten years the GIF has been the only platform working in with its member MDBs and private sector partners to structure and prepare sustainable infrastructure projects in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), including for climate change mitigation and adaptation. The private sector highlighted the need to ramp up the development of bankable investment pipelines in emerging markets for private investment to close the investment gap for the SDG and global climate goals. Participants noted that scaling up the GIF is an efficient solution as it has played a significant role in closing the infrastructure gap in EMDEs – preparing 172 projects of which 27 have already reached close, mobilizing over $100 in purely private capital for every $1 of GIF project preparation support at financial close. Replenishing the GIF funding is imperative to facilitate and mobilize private sector mobilization at scale for the SDGs and climate action – as also called for by the G20 Independent Expert Group.

  • Just released: The GIF’s Annual Highlights Report for July 2022 – December 2023! The latest GIF Annual Highlights Report showcases the GIF’s operations, achievements, and impact between July 2022 to December 2023, marking one of the GIF’s strongest periods with 36 project activities approved in 28 countries that are expected to mobilize $22.72 billion in total private investment. The report also showcases the GIF’s growing global presence, including at COP28 in Dubai, and solidifies our position as a driver of climate-smart initiatives: over the last three years, 93% of projects and programs supported by the GIF have been climate smart, including in renewable energy, energy efficiency, low-carbon transport, social infrastructure, water and wastewater management, as well as new technologies such as green hydrogen. Since its inception in 2014, the GIF has approved 171 project activities in 68 countries with 21 transactions reaching commercial close, of which 16 also reached financial close. Every $1 provided in GIF project preparation support has mobilized $100 in actual private investment at financial close (excluding commercial DFI finance)—an impressive realized mobilization ratio and a highly efficient use of public funds. We are grateful to our donor, MDB, country government, and private sector partners for another period of seamless collaboration to enable public-private infrastructure finance at a transformative scale for sustainable development impact and climate action in emerging markets! “Scaling up private finance for sustainable, climate-smart infrastructure starts with increasing bankable investment opportunities.” Astrid Manroth, Head of the Global Infrastructure Facility Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e6AWjYEX

  • 🌍💡 On December 9th, Astrid Manroth, Head of the Global Infrastructure Facility (GIF), participated in a pivotal event organized by MIGA, "Mobilizing Private Investment in the Energy Transition: The Role of Project Preparation Facilities." The discussion delved into the crucial gap between offering energy projects and making them bankable, emphasizing how enhancing project preparation can scale up private capital in energy transition projects. Institutional facilities, like the GIF, are well-positioned to support such projects by providing preparation and closing guidance, ensuring the projects reach financial close.     ▶️🔗 Watch the event replay to hear perspectives from Leria Arinaitwe (Legal Counsel and Energy Sector Lead, The African Legal Support Facility), Mikael L.
