Dr. JOSIAH NANG-BAYI, MD, an entrepreneur, researcher, and physician in Sunyani, Bono Region, believes late diagnosis and treatments is a significant challenge to improve #liverhealth in #Ghana. Primary care facilities don’t have doctors present most of the time – only a nurse, physician assistant, or community health worker. These health workers are neither trained nor equipped to consider about chronic liver conditions. Even when an individual’s liver levels are elevated, they simply check for viral hepatitis and manage for common infections. Drawing from a wealth of studies and the perspectives of community experts, GLI's "Global State of Liver Health" report defines and analyzes the landscape of #LiverHealth around the world. 🌍 To explore more of the report and learn about #liver disease's worldwide impacts, visit: https://lnkd.in/gg79cEbq 📖 #LiverHealthisPublicHealth #PublicHealth #LiverHealth

The team at GLI was saddened to hear that Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has passed away after her battle with pancreatic cancer. Congresswoman Jackson Lee has been an inspiration to our community as a longtime public servant, a mother, a daughter, and a patient herself. She served as a fierce champion, both for her constituents and for all patients throughout the country. A contributor to our Advanced Advocacy Academy (A3) program, her commitment to improving patient care and equity shone through her work. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family in this challenging time.

August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM), a collaborative effort to save and improve the quality of life of diverse communities by creating a positive culture for organ, eye, and tissue donation. Why is NMDAM needed? 60% of national transplant waiting list patients are from multicultural communities. The need for donation and transplant is more pronounced in minority communities where disproportionately higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease contribute to organ failure, especially kidney failure. You can find resources to share and read more about NMDAM at nmag1.org and DonateLife.net. 💙💚 #DonateLife #NMDAM2024 NMDAM is a collaborative effort of the National Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Multicultural Action Group (NMAG).

Why is advocacy important for patients? At last year’s #A3experience, GLI COO, Larry Holden highlighted the importance of effective advocacy. When a patient or caregiver shares their story, significant attention can be drawn to the need for systemic change to be made in the patient's journey through the healthcare system. Aldona Oszczypała (51) suffered multiple injuries in a car accident in May, with her liver sustaining the most damage. The medical team in Ostrowiec could not save her liver and urgently referred her to the Department of General, Transplant, and Liver Surgery at the Medical University of Warsaw - MUW. The following day, Oszczypała was airlifted to #Warsaw and placed under the care of Professor Michał Grąt. His team conducted the pioneering auxiliary #livertransplant, using a fragment of a deceased donor's liver to temporarily support her own liver’s regeneration. By leveraging the regenerative capabilities of the remaining part of her #liver, supported temporarily by the transplanted fragment, Oszczypała avoided a full liver transplant. She left the hospital with a fully functional liver, does not require immunosuppressive therapy, and has not experienced significant complications.
