This marks the day when we have exhausted the natural resources our planet can produce and the carbon it can absorb in one year. So, from this date on, we start living on borrowed resources for the next year. World Overshoot Day once again demonstrates the urgency and importance of sustainability and environmental awareness. We should take this day as a reminder and review our consumption habits, energy use and overall lifestyle. Small steps by all of us to raise awareness can lead to big changes. Hello LinkedIn, Discussions and new applications over the topic of climate change are perhaps more important than ever nowadays. Short winters without snowfall, the absence of spring/autumn days, and summer days being much hotter than before all point to a now an impossible to ignore problem for all of us: climate change. One of the main reasons for this global problem is greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. So, what exactly are these gases and why are they so important? Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) create a "greenhouse effect" by trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere. This effect is necessary to keep our planet warm enough to sustain life. However, human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes have significantly increased the concentration of these gases. The increase in GHG emissions has led to several environmental problems: - Global Warming: High temperatures disrupt weather patterns, leading to extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts, and floods (as recently observed in Turkey). - Rising in Sea Levels: The melting of polar ice caps causes sea levels to rise, threatening coastal communities. If we understand the problems mentioned above, what can we do to reverse it? - Use of Renewable Energy: Switching to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and others can significantly reduce emissions. - Supporting Sustainable Applications: Encourage practices such as reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and waste reduction! We can start by reducing single-use products and decreasing our paper and plastic usage! By understanding the causes and effects of greenhouse gas emissions, we can work together towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
