Last week was the one month mark of Mirela Lynch and Maria Emilia (Mare) Gandarela Lamas joining Arbo! Our 2024 Forge interns have been supporting our team in multiple ways. Mirela has been supporting our data and product teams by implementing data pipelines between our cloud-based storage and data science infrastructure, enabling more streamlined insights and analytics. Mare has joined the Commercial team and is leading content distribution across Arbo’s various marketing channels. Together with Rohan, she’s also researching certified gas, to support the development of Arbo viewpoints on the prospects and modalities of potential future regulation. We are grateful Arbo (and America’s most critical industry) will be a part of your career journeys and for the opportunity to help advance your development. BZ to both of you, on your first month’s accomplishments.

Another new Arbonaut post! 🚨 Welcome,  Jenny Yu! As part of her role, Jenny will support the Product team by researching external datasets related to emerging energy technologies, designing and implementing acquisition logic and database structure for warehousing, and building RESTful web APIs integral to development initiatives. Prior to joining Arbo full time, she formed part of our intern cohort last year, working as a Software Engineer. She recently graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in Computer Science and a Math minor, where she also served as a Mathematics Teaching Assistant and as a student photographer at the Office of Communication. In 2021, Jenny participated in the HackHolyoke Competition, winning first place in the Sustainability Hack – which consisted of building a mobile app that tracks recycling habits through data compilation. We are very excited to have such a talented software engineer join our team.

On Monday, we welcomed Rohan Nimmagadda to our team! Arbonauts are excited to have him onboard as a Energy Research & Content Analyst — helping our customers to anticipate and interpret the regulatory and market events impacting energy infrastructure and commerce. Rohan recently graduated from the George Washington University School of Business with a degree in International Business, where he excelled in courses such as Oil and Gas and Global Energy, and enjoyed the opportunity of working with Congressman Randy Weber, Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne, and Chairwoman Kay Granger, which supported his understanding of energy policy and the legislative process. In this role, Rohan worked closely with constituents to address their concerns and provide vote recommendations for the representatives he worked with. His time at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck helped him develop a deep understanding of tax policy, environmental policy, and foreign affairs to help clients better understand the regulatory environment. His record of academic excellence and hands-on experience in energy policy and research makes him a fantastic addition to our team. Please join us in welcoming Rohan!

Arbo shared our POV with Hart in this recent article on familiar midstream challenges faced by Enbridge’s Line 5. As Carey Perlozzo, VP Marketing & Customer Ops notes, "We desperately need judicial reform with some kind of statute of limitations on permitting challenges." Unfortunately, we know quite well how the growing prevalence of litigation delays infrastructure development, from almost a decade providing data-driven analytics on project schedules and in-service date forecasts to the midstream and trading segments.

Earlier this year, #ColonialPipeline filed new rules and regulations as well as a revised #tariff reflecting #FERC ’s directives pursuant to a seven-years-long protest proceeding. Industry standard (or lack thereof) for PLA mechanisms was addressed repeatedly in the recent Colonial docket, so we thought it prudent to review PLA and #transmix practices for similarly situated products carriers. This brief survey supports the proposition that there is no “one size fits all” approach for loss allowance, related fees, and transmix handling.

In April, the #EPA approved 4 more regulations; one will particularly affect new #naturalgas power plants and modification projects. It’s important for stakeholders to understand how this rulemaking will impact sector costs, and consequently the industry. We looked at historical data for useful insights into how upcoming #regulations might affect future capacity factors. Perhaps most significantly, for new or modified base load generators that will sell more than 40% of their potential electric output, the rule requires 90% CCS by 2032. 36 out of 160 currently planned generators are #CCTG, which could fall under this baseload category if they are able to stay under the 56% capacity factor.

In the past 5 years, the percentage change of #Virginia ’s annual electricity has drastically increased as the state faces the fastest growing demand for #datacenters in the country, giving Northern Virginia the renowned nickname “The Data Center Alley”. Commercial sales are up almost 30% compared to 2018 levels, and the state’s overall sales have increased by close to 10% in the same timeframe. That’s far more than the nationwide average.
