Empowering girls for a lifetime of healthy living

About us

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program designed to develop and enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical competencies to successfully navigate life experiences. All of this is accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community. The mission of Girls on the Run St. Louis is to empower girls for a lifetime of healthy living. Our program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grades inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The 20-lesson Girls on the Run curriculum combines training for a 5k (3.1 miles) running event with lessons that inspire girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem solving skills and make healthy decisions. However, Girls on the Run is so much more than an after school running program. It is a philosophy. It not only affects the girls who participate in the program, but also the volunteer coaches who deliver it and the many community members who support our program and mission. This provides an environment for all girls and women that nurtures, develops, and celebrates their strengths and empowers them to be their most authentic selves.

In December 2019 I signed up to be a #SoleMate for Girls on the Run St. Louis and run the #ChicagoMarathon Little did I know, how impactful this decision would be for me years later. When I took that first step towards the marathon, I was driven by a desire to support an organization that empowers young girls to discover their limitless potential and to cross off a bucket list item. Becoming a SoleMate was my way of giving back while I pushed myself to a goal I had dreamed about for so long. However, as the pandemic unfolded, I found myself facing unimaginable grief and loss. The weight of the world seemed unbearable, and the emotions that surfaced were overwhelming. In those moments of darkness, running became my lifeline. Each stride was a testament to my resilience, a way to process my emotions, and a path to healing. Training for the marathon was not just about physical endurance; it was a journey of emotional strength and self-discovery. Every mile I ran, every drop of sweat, and every moment of exhaustion was a step towards reclaiming my sense of self; reminding me that I was not alone in my journey. I am so grateful for the decision to become a #SoleMate. It saved my life in ways I never anticipated. The Chicago Marathon became more than a race – it was a celebration of resilience, hope, and power. To everyone at Girls on the Run, thank you for creating a space where girls and women can find their strength, their voice, and their courage. Your mission inspired me to keep moving forward, even when the path seemed uncertain. To those who are navigating their own journeys of grief and loss, know that you are not alone. There is strength in every step, and healing in every mile. Embrace the process, lean on your community, and remember that you are capable of incredible things. Here's to the power of running, the support of an amazing organization, and the unbreakable spirit within us all!

  • We're just TWO days away from the start of the 14er Challenge and this year we have four incredible Climbers that will summit the two highest peaks in the lower 48 to raise support for our Girls on the Run! Meet Amy Riddle! Amy and her son are Sparklers at our 5ks, ensuring every Girl on the Run feels supported, powerful and full of possibility. Amy has chosen to complete the 14er Challenge, raising scholarship funds for GIrls on the Run, because "I believe all kids should have access to a support system no matter their financial situation. I think we all form our inner voices as a child and being taught to have a positive, believe in yourself mentality will benefit you throughout your entire life." We couldn't agree more and are so excited to have you as a champion for our GOTR, Amy! If you'd like to make a donation to Amy's campaign, you can do so via Venmo @GOTRSTL with 'Amy Riddle' as the comment!

  • The past year of Girls on the Run St. Louis programming has yielded tremendous outcomes for our community and we could not be more grateful for the dedication of our coaches, partners and Girls on the Run families!    The Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 GOTR seasons were the largest since before the onset of the pandemic, serving 4,557 participants and 1,750 coaches from 250 different sites across our 23-county territory in MO and IL. Girls on the Run St. Louis was the largest of more than 160 councils in North America this program year! I am honored to step into the role of Board Chair for Girls on the Run St. Louis, an organization that has had a profound impact on our community. Girls on the Run is more than a program; it’s a transformative experience that empowers young girls to achieve their potential. Through our programs, we have positively influenced the lives of thousands of girls across the region, fostering confidence, connection, and healthy lifestyles for the last 23 years. Our recent accomplishments are a testament to the dedication of our team and volunteers. In the 2024-2025 year, we successfully expanded our reach, bringing our programs to new schools and communities, and further enriching the lives of participants. Our annual 5K events continue to inspire, with record-breaking participation that highlights the community’s support and enthusiasm. On a personal note, I am deeply grateful to Girls on the Run for introducing me to my first marathon. The skills and lessons I learned through running have been invaluable, especially in the most challenging times of my life. When I was training for the Chicago marathon, I faced heartbreaking loss but the resilience, strength, and sense of community I gained through Girls on the Run helped me navigate this profound grief. It reinforced the importance of perseverance, support, and the power of setting and achieving goals. As I take on this new role, I am committed to continuing our mission and expanding our impact. I look forward to working with our dedicated board, staff, volunteers, and community partners to empower even more girls in the St. Louis region. Together, we can inspire the next generation to be joyful, healthy, and confident. Thank you to everyone who has supported Girls on the Run St. Louis. Your contributions make a lasting difference. #GOTRSTL #GOTR #GirlsontherunStLouis #marathontraining #buildingresilience
