Nationally, approximately three million people have or have had an opioid use disorder (OUD) — including both prescription opioids and illicit drugs. Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), a foundation of the health care safety net, provide critical services to underserved and historically marginalized communities in more than 15,000 locations across the nation. As an FQHC, Greater Portland Health provides care to Greater Portland community members across 16 health centers. A new report from the Center for Health Care Strategies, in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts, explores opportunities to provide medications for opioid use disorder at FQHCs. It outlines strategies at the health center, state, and federal levels to support the clinical, organizational, and financial capacity of FQHCs to increase access to MOUD. A case study was conducted at our Healthcare for the Homeless health center located at 63 Preble Street to examine how FQHCs address the opioid crisis. Read the report and case study below. https://lnkd.in/eqMfgEgz https://lnkd.in/ebsWr2ja

Last week at our Bayside health center, Maine medical professionals announced that beginning on January 1st, the 1,000 Lives Campaign will launch in our state. The campaign's goal is to reduce the number of opioid-related deaths by 1,000 over the next five years. We are proud to support this initiative alongside other clinicians and organizations across the state. https://lnkd.in/g_5g6yps

Last night, Dr. Kevin Sullivan, Greater Portland Health’s Clinical Director of Healthcare for the Homeless, spoke at Preble Street’s Homeless Persons’ Annual Vigil in remembrance of the 45 lives lost from the homeless community this year. “Our team cares for some amazing people... while meeting their medical needs, I get a glimpse into their awesomeness. I think that my patients have saved more lives than I ever could have, loved and been loved by too many to count, and seen more traumatic events than I could ever imagine.“

Today is the 35th annual World AIDS Day, a day dedicated to ending HIV-related stigma, honoring those we have lost, and committing to working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat. HIV cannot be cured, but it can be treated. Medications such as PrEP and PEP work to prevent the infection from spreading to others. Talk to your provider for more information. GPH has World AIDS Day ribbons and info cards at our health centers today for staff and patients, and our partners Frannie Peabody Center are hosting a candlelight vigil tonight at 5:30PM in Monument Square, Portland followed by a film screening at Equality Community Center. #WorldAIDSDay #RememberAndCommit #HRSAHonorsWAD

Today is Giving Tuesday! By donating to Greater Portland Health, you are directly supporting individuals in our community. In 2023, Giving Tuesday donations helped us support patients in the form of toiletries, prescription refills, transportation assistance, clothing, emergency shelter, and more. A $25 donation can provide 12 patients with bus vouchers to access health services. A $50 donation can provide 10 patients who are living unsheltered with winter hats, mittens, and two pairs of socks. A $100 donation can supply two patients with personal medical equipment. A $1,000 donation can provide $50 grocery gift cards to 20 patients. Donate today: https://lnkd.in/dmzzX7-3
