Congratulations to the Green Foothills Leadership Program 2024 participants, who graduated on August 17! Each participant in this year’s class of 19 graduates used what they learned in the Leadership Program to design a capstone project focusing on environmental justice and/or conservation. Participants worked individually or in small groups, and the projects were presented at graduation. This year’s projects: - A Glass-Free Beach - Agricultural Education in California Schools - Building a More Resilient East Palo Alto - Clean Air for the Bay: Lowering Carbon Emissions - Empower the Voters: San Benito County Ballot Initiative - Planting Trees in Gilroy - Preserving the Existing Green Space in Mountain View's Cuesta Park - San Jose Community Food Forest - Trap-Neuter-Release for a San Jose Cat Colony Please help us spread the word about next year’s program. It meets one Saturday per month from January through August, and is open to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in San Mateo, Santa Clara, or San Benito Counties, and who wants to learn how to create and lead effective campaigns for the environment justice. Californians will have a chance this November to vote for a historic $10 billion climate resilience bond. This bond measure, titled Proposition 4, would ensure funding for a wide variety of environmental programs. The purpose of the bond is to provide a reliable source of funding to help the state deal with climate change. This is especially important given the Legislature’s recent decision to make steep cuts to other climate funding in order to fix the state’s budget deficit. Green Foothills has published a new report, 'Coyote Valley: A Vital Landscape', about how recent proposals for rezoning the Monterey Road corridor threaten the progress that’s been made in protecting this crucial area. Coyote Valley, just south of San José, is a key location for preserving wildlife connectivity, regional biodiversity, and trails and public open space. Numerous scientific studies support conserving all of Coyote Valley as protected open space for the sake of climate resilience, biodiversity, and flood protection. Santa Clara County voters agree and have consistently and overwhelmingly supported conservation of this region. Yet now, these efforts could be undermined by recent proposed developments directly in the Coyote Creek corridor between Monterey Road and US Highway 101. Squeezing development into this narrow, critical slice of land and water will have dramatic, negative impacts. But maintaining this protected corridor, and locating development in urbanized areas rather than the green fields of Coyote Valley, will provide numerous benefits to all the species who share this area – including humans.
