The timeless glamor of a Californian wine tasting has waned in the last 5 years as young consumers are less interested in wine. In its wake, specialty coffee culture is rising and cupping events are popping up in cafes across California. As part of Groundwork’s commitment to “relationship coffee,” Co-Founder & Chief Coffee Guy Jeffrey Chean frequently makes coffee origin trips to create and strengthen trade partnerships and friendships with producers. Jeff typically visits Honduras in May when producers are harvesting and processing plentiful coffee. Twice a month, Elizabeth and George Burtt drive their 1936 Plymouth coupe to the Groundwork Roastery in North Hollywood to scoop up coffee chaff. They haul it home to Sun Valley and let their 7-year-old son sprinkle the recycled substrate around the coop for their eight ducks.
