Creating common ground, growing community through the joy of fresh food.

About us

Grow It Green Morristown promotes health through urban agriculture, discovery-based learning and equitable food access. The joy of creating positive experiences and building community around fresh food has the ability to change health outcomes, particularly for communities most impacted by nutritional insecurity and access to green spaces. Grow It Green Morristown creates more than just beautiful green spaces. We create a point of contact between various stakeholder groups, that might not otherwise have an opportunity to encounter one-another. Putting your hands and hearts in the soil is a necessary and important way to build community and care for the health of its people and the land which are one. We believe that programs around fresh food and creating more just and sustainable food systems inspire change and self sustaining resilience throughout entire neighborhoods. You can't separate social justice and human rights from a commitment to biodiversity and a flourishing food system - they go hand in hand! • Sharing this draft recommendation statement, open now for comment, with our amazing community health care partners Zufall Health, GORYEB CHILDRENS CENTER and Marisa Sweeney MS RDN RYT to comment regarding healthcare screening for food insecurity. These findings in the draft statement help drive our food access programs and encourage policies that help fund for more programs like FarmRx: It recommends fruit and vegetable incentive programs for households with lower incomes, finding that these programs reduced household food insecurity and increased household fruit and vegetable consumption.

Having limited access to nutritious food, known as food insecurity, greatly impacts the health of many children and adults across the U.S. For the first time, the #USPSTF explored whether screening and interventions in the #primarycare setting could improve health outcomes, but unfortunately, there is little evidence on what might work. In the absence of evidence, healthcare professionals should be aware of barriers that make it difficult for their patients to access nutritious food, listen to their concerns about food insecurity, and connect people to available resources as needed. • Incredible FOOD & MOOD project featured below for May Mental Health Awareness Month exploring the essential opportunity with food given the links to mental health. There is a well documented relationship between nourishing food and youth emotional wellness. Consistent access is key for children and that is why the Urban Farm was built to take school gardens to the next level and insure year round programming is happening for Morris County children. You can get involved in making this programming available for children so that we can assist teachers, parents and the community by nourishing nature and neighbors. Volunteer slots are open at the farm and we are opening up sponsorships for 15th anniversary activities and events that help make this possible! Join Kings Food Markets, Hampshire Real Estate and Community Foundation of New Jersey- thank you!

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Food and Mood Project aims to promote emotional wellness and reduce the impact of mental health and substance use conditions among the K-12 population by identifying and implementing strategies that address the intersection between behavioral health, food/nutrition security and cultural food diversity. 🧠 At the SAHMSA Food and Mood Meeting last August, Dr. Carmen Shanks presented on recent Food and Mood research. The main findings? - Lower food security is linked to adverse mental health and substance use outcomes among youth. 📚 - Similar to food security, foreshadowing data demonstrate a negative relationship between nutrition security and child behavioral health. 📉 - Combining varied approaches and nutrition programs is key to improving health outcomes and increasing food and nutrition security among youth. 🫐 We are grateful for the practitioners, researchers and agencies researching the linkages between mental health, substance use and food and nutrition security to address multi-faceted social determinants of health! 📣 Breaking news: BIG wins for farm to school! 👏 ‎ Yesterday, the USDA Food and Nutrition Service announced the updated nutrition standards for schools, early care and education sites, and out of school programs. The new rules contain major wins for farm to school, including a measure to simplify local purchasing that National Farm to School Network has long championed! ‎ Under the new rules, child nutrition programs will now be able to use 🥕 “locally grown,” 🐓 “locally raised,” or 🎣 “locally caught” as a specific requirement for unprocessed or minimally processed food items. ‎ Basically, this removes a lot of the complexity that child nutrition programs had to navigate in order to purchase local food. School cafeterias and child care programs can now purchase local foods more easily! ‎ Thank you to all of our Partners and community members who contributed to NFSN’s comments on the proposed version of this rule in Spring 2023. Your advocacy has made a difference! View the full rule summary here: https://lnkd.in/eegk5_at

CSA’s with SNAP are as low as $5/week with SNAP for the first time this year. See you this summer - please spread the word about signups. We are excited about our first planned crop of sweet corn!

It's just Mark Dinglasan, MBA popping into your news feed because we’re looking forward to launching the new Summer EBT program in New Jersey! Summer EBT will help promote food security by providing benefits to families with eligible school-age children for groceries when schools are not in session. Shoutouts to: - All of the trusted community organizations and partners who are helping spread the word as they provide services, deliver programs, and hold pantry shopping days and scheduled meal services for their neighbors. - Schools across the state who are already fielding calls from parents and guardians, confirming families' contact information and receiving a flurry of school meal applications/household surveys as families inquire about their eligibility to participate in Summer EBT, and are trying to do so by April 19 of this year. - Peers and colleagues across multiple state departments, agencies and advocacy groups including, Hunger Free NJ, NJ School Nutrition Association, Food and Nutrition Service for the NJ Dept. of Ag., NJ Dept. of Ed, Office of New Americans, the NJ Association of School Business Officials, and so many more whom we'll applaud in future posts.
