20 years of GOMA: Governors' Action Plan III was released in 2016. This five-year plan was the first to include Data & Monitoring and Wildlife & Fisheries as priority issues, offering proof that the Alliance can restructure its priorities and organization to better serve the changing needs of the region. In addition, three new cross-team initiatives were created: Ecosystem Services; Marine Debris; and Conservation, Restoration and Resilience Planning. "This plan reinforces the Alliance’s commitment to effective regional collaboration and coordination, addressing issues common to all five Gulf States in a voluntary way" - stated in a letter signed by all five Gulf state governors. “We greatly value the partnerships developed through the Gulf of Mexico Alliance. It is a truly unique organization in the region dedicated to the power of collaborative work to reach common goals. These collaborative efforts will continue to become even more important with time. We are glad to be a part of the Alliance since its beginning and as it embarks on this current Action Plan.” – Kristen Laursen, Gulf of Mexico Regional Coordinator National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

What we do: Support Gulf Youth Ambassadors There's a quote from whom we do not know the author that goes, "we do not inherit the Earth 🌎from our ancestors; we borrow It from our children." And we are happy to say, the kids are doing alright. Thanks to funding from the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine NASEM Gulf Research Program through our Gulf Star program, students across the region are getting the opportunity to make real change in their communities. The Gulf Youth Ambassadors Program, managed by the Gulf Reach Institute, is working with five students currently to help them make their project ideas a reality. . . . #GulfofMexico #goodfortheGulf #GulfReach #youthambassadors Ava Varela of Texas, is investigating water quality in Texas Bays. Varela was also able to attend Capitol Hill Ocean Week in Washington D.C. in June. Adreyonna Matthews of Louisiana is bringing awareness to others about local environmental justice issues, including coastal resiliency. Lia Araiza Ortiz of Texas, is working with grocery chain HEB's "Our Community Investment Program" on ways to lessen their plastic usage. Aiden Holdsworth of Alabama is restoring local marshes and documenting the impacts restoration has on native species. Montserrat Maldonado of Mexico is researching where local marine debris is coming from and working with local fishermen to raise awareness and hopefully lessen the amount of plastic debris. What we do: Dolphin 🐬 Watch What's that I see? 👓 Could it be? Is it a 🐬dolphin ? For the past year, funding from Hess Corporation through our Gulf Star program has been used to support Galveston Dolphin Research Program volunteer training. These volunteers document fisher/dolphin interactions and take photographs that can be used in future research. They also use this opportunity to talk about the issue of marine debris and monofilament fishing line recycling. Recently, 16 volunteers went through two full days of training at the Dolphin Research and Outreach Station at Seawolf Park. . . . #dolphin #GulfofMexico #GoodfortheGulf Galveston Bay Foundation

What we do: Help communities plan for resilient 💪 and affordable 💲housing 🏘️ A lack of affordable housing is a common concern across the Gulf of Mexico. This is especially true in areas where a large number of homes have been damaged or destroyed by disasters. Along with our partners at the Florida Housing Coalition and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, we are helping local governments integrate affordable housing with hazard planning using the CHARM mapping tool. Partners recently met with stakeholders from Bay County, Florida, to pin point building sites that are less likely to be impacted by disasters while still meeting community needs (think day cares and grocery stores). This project will also include a guide to help communities plan with resilience in mind. This project is supported by the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. . . . #GoodfortheGulf #GulfofMexico #stormprep #coastalresilience
