As we approach World Ocean Day next month, it is important for us not to discount the small changes that one can accomplish to make a difference in the health of the ecosystems that support us. Last month the World Economic Forum posted on the benefits of being an "imperfect environmentalist" - borrowed from Sheila Morovati's recent book. Even small actions can move the needle when it comes to being healthier as an individual, and with very minor changes to daily habits. These changes, on the aggregate, make a huge difference in overall footprint, and using consumers' purchasing power to have direct action. Here are 3 I've implemented at home:
1) Avoid food in plastic or styrofoam.
Foods in plastic or styrofoam absorb plasticizers, which bind estrogen receptors and many other receptors in the human body. We've all seen that slick on the top of coffee in a styrofoam cup. This can lead to serious health problems. Environmental benefits include the reduction of plastic waste at its source. If you own a business, think of using products like those made by companies like PlantPack by Lifepack or Terravive.
2) Walk or bike more, or move to areas of denser units.
This is a bit hard in the U.S., but the human benefits are clear: more connection with community is good for us! The environmental benefits are that our overall geographic footprint is lessened, producing less carbon. Walkscore.com can help you search for cities of multiple sizes.
3) Use a search engine that plants trees!
Ecosia plants trees with their earnings from ads. I've seen no real change in search results, and it is a way to improve tree cover worldwide. This improves overall carbon capture and biodiversity.
You don't have to be perfect - small changes can make a big difference in our individual health and in the world we see around us every day. Aside from donating to organizations that actively do this sort of work (Remote Ecologist shameless plug) or going full vegan (I've not), there is still a great deal we can all do.
