  • Across our enterprise, HCA Healthcare colleagues show up to care for their patients, communities and each other. A great example is our own Eric Rose, AVP of Physician Recruitment, who has been devoting much of his personal time for the last 10 years to coordinating annual medical assistance trips to the African nation of Zimbabwe. Efforts have been so impactful that they have earned the attention and support of the Zimbabwean First Lady. It all began with an observation made during a trip to South Africa in 2014, when Eric and his wife, Brandi, witnessed firsthand the healthcare challenges faced by communities in neighboring Zimbabwe. The evident need for medical assistance sparked a newfound determination in Eric to make a difference in Africa. Returning home, Eric immediately began planning his next trip, and eventually established the ZimbabWEcare Foundation, a nonprofit rooted in a simple yet profound mission to bring medical teams to Zimbabwe’s underserved regions for urgent and emergent care. Initially, recruiting volunteers was challenging, but through word of mouth and personal appeals, Eric gradually built a dedicated team. Their inaugural trip in March 2015 with just six volunteers marked the beginning of an annual journey to remote Zimbabwean villages. Setting up makeshift clinics under trees or inside schools, they provided essential medical services ranging from wound care to dental extractions. Despite logistical challenges and minimal funding, Eric’s determination and the team’s passion ensured their impact grew each year. ZimbabWEcare operates on a self-funded basis, with volunteers covering their own travel expenses. This model has enabled them to maintain flexibility and focus on delivering medical supplies directly to those in need. Over the years, HCA Healthcare has donated supplies for the trips and included the foundation in the list of approved nonprofit organizations on YourCause.com. “What sets us apart is our mobility and our ability to operate in areas with minimal infrastructure,” Eric explained. By setting up temporary clinics in remote villages, they not only provide immediate healthcare, but also attract attention from local authorities, spurring infrastructure improvements like wells and roads. Recently, ZimbabWEcare collaborated with the Zimbabwean government and local healthcare providers to host a three-day clinic that served over 7,000 villagers. During that event, First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa visited Eric and his team to thank them personally for their efforts. Eric’s story is a reminder that commitment to the care and improvement of human life isn’t just focused within our own HCA Healthcare walls. President of Practice Operations Tedrick Johnson said, “Eric’s commitment and work over the years in Zimbabwe is yet another example of how ‘We Show UP!’ – even when we think nobody is watching. We are immensely proud of all he has done to make a very real difference for the people of Zimbabwe.”

  • In the heart of Charleston, South Carolina, a small but passionate team has been making waves in the fight against gynecologic cancers since 2017. In this crucial battle, our dedicated colleagues from HCA Healthcare’s Physician Services are there every step of the way, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the care and improvement of human life. Started in Charlotte, North Carolina, Teal Diva describes itself as “a tight-knit community of celebration, hope and support for those impacted by gynecologic cancer.” Through events and programs such as its annual Teal Diva 5k run, which started in 2014, the organization has made significant strides in raising awareness and empowering and supporting those affected by these often-overlooked diseases. The impact of the Teal Diva 5k event, now expanded to Charleston, is a testament to the power of collective action. The extension of the 5k to Charleston began at a conference hosted by the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Central South Carolina when Teal Diva Founder Shannon Routh met Rachel Kolar, RN, at Trident Health’s Carolina Center of Gynecologic Oncology (CCGO). According to Rachel, there had been a tremendous need in the Charleston market for an event to bring cancer patients, survivors and health professionals together to raise awareness and show support for one another. This initial encounter sparked a collaboration that has grown stronger each year, offering hope and optimism for the future. In 2017, Charleston hosted its first Teal Diva 5k, and the CCGO was a major sponsor. In true We Show Up! fashion, the CCGO has continued to support this event year after year, with over 50 colleagues participating annually, and the center consistently is one of the event’s strongest financial backers. Their presence extends beyond monetary support; they actively engage with survivors at the Trident Health tent, providing encouragement and solidarity with everyone attending the event. Practice Manager Dee Dee Elam describes the partnership with Teal Diva as a natural fit with the patient-focused culture of the CCGO. “Teal Diva is an organization that reflects our commitment to show up as a team,” she stated. “We want the women of the [South Carolina] Lowcountry to know that they are not in this fight alone. Our patients are more than our patients; we are family.” As awareness of gynecologic cancers grows, so does the commitment of Teal Diva and its supporters, including those from Trident Health and the CCGO. Through partnerships like this, these diseases receive the attention they deserve. For the HCA Healthcare colleagues in Charleston, supporting Teal Diva isn’t just about sponsorship — it’s about showing up and standing alongside those fighting these diseases, every step of the way. #WeShowUp #HealthierTomorrows

  • On March 4, a group of 12 eager Capital Division colleagues showed up at Feeding Southwest Virginia to prepare 5,000 pounds of food for distribution, inspired to give back to their community – and each other. They were driven to serve, but not just for the benefit of this food bank that supports 380 partner feeding programs across 26 counties. They were also driven to simultaneously raise support for an organization, the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund.   Showing up for the community is not new in Capital Division, where Physician Services colleagues have a strong reputation for supporting local service organizations. However, earlier this year Director of Physician Services and her team were looking for ways to increase the division’s support for the Hope Fund when she saw an opportunity to couple the ongoing volunteer activity with the Volunteer Grants program.   As a reminder, through the Volunteer Grants, when an HCA Healthcare colleague logs 10 volunteer hours within calendar year, it unlocks a $200 donation, or Care Card, to be given to the charity of their choice.   Mary Price’s idea was to encourage her team members to meet that 10-hour mark and donate their Care Cards to the Hope Fund, HCA Healthcare’s colleague-run, colleague supported nonprofit benefitting colleagues in times of crisis. She enlisted the help of Practice Manager Brittni Wyda to spearhead the volunteer effort, organizing teams and coordinating with the food bank staff. Brittni says that colleagues responded enthusiastically to the call to action due in no small part to the example set by division leadership. “Leaders being directly involved in this program has been a key to its success,” she says.   Mary Price has noticed another benefit to the volunteer projects: team building. “In our positions we all rely strongly on one another, and volunteering builds our team by allowing us to reconnect, reinforce our trust in each another and most importantly have fun. To be honest, it makes us feel great to be part of something and to give back, I am not sure who benefits more, us or the community we serve.”   This recent push for community service has inspired many leaders in Capital Division to begin their own projects benefitting other agencies and taking advantage of the Volunteer Grants. So far this year, 10 volunteers have completed 10 hours of service each and have directed their Care Cards to the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund, resulting in donations of $2,000.   Congratulations to those colleagues in the southwest Virginia market who are showing up for their communities and each other! https://lnkd.in/eGmyNTfZ #WeShowUp

  • Today is #Juneteenth, a celebration and reminder of the official end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday in 2021 to reflect on the history of slavery in the U.S., rejoice in the progress our country has made and to advocate for continued meaningful change. As part of HCA Healthcare, Physician Services remains committed to creating healthier, more equitable tomorrows for our patients, colleagues and communities.

At HCA Healthcare, "We Show Up!" isn't just a slogan, it's what we do and who we are. We had a great time volunteering some time on Friday afternoon at a local organization that is doing extraordinary work helping women and children find safe refuge from domestic violence and a pathway to a safe, secure new life. Great team and a great time together! #HCAhealthcare #WeShowUP #CaringfortheCommunity
