Cash assistance results in fewer emergency visits. After winning a lottery in the Boston suburb of Chelsea, Massachusetts, some residents received up to $400 per month from November 2020 to August 2021. Lottery analysis shows that those who got the money had 27% fewer visits an emergency room in the nine-month period compared with those who didn’t receive the monthly payments. Morehouse School of Medicine's perinatal patient navigators, recent graduates of their new rural doula training program, is among a growing number of similar efforts being introduced across the country. As more communities aim to address maternal mortality and poor maternal health outcomes, especially for Black women and other women of color, there is a growing demand to develop a doula workforce to help meet this end.
