“There’s so many people out there that want to work, but they don't have a chance. [The 1% ask will] give them that chance by passing legislation to get more products into people's hands that are made by people who are blind,” said Brandye Lacy, marketing coordinator for Austin Lighthouse, highlighting the crucial importance of the “1% ask.” This seemingly small percentage was the central focus of the 2024 Public Policy Forum by National Industries for the Blind (NIB) in Washington, D.C., because it can make a world of difference, creating lots of job opportunities and empowering people with blindness to thrive. How, exactly? Listen to this week’s episode of the Heard & Empowered podcast, where Brandye chats with our host, Hoby Wedler, Ph.D., and you’ll discover how US Congress can ensure that the United States Department of Defense dedicates 1% of its procurement budget to acquiring products and services from the #AbilityOne® Program under the U.S. AbilityOne Commission. These goods and services, produced and provided by people who are #blind, #visuallyimpaired, or who have significant #disabilities, create vital employment opportunities and help them earn a sustainable income. Don’t miss out on this amazing episode! Click the link to hear how Brandye is transforming #publicpolicy and making a difference with her #advocacy as a graduate of NIB’s Advocates for Leadership and Employment program. 🎧 🔗 Listen now and be inspired by Brandye's story: https://lnkd.in/erF_eh6U
