The water demands of Resolution Copper’s proposed mine will deplete, destroy, and poison substantial amounts of limited and precious water resources in a region already suffering from historic drought. Besides being used to transport toxic waste to the tailing site, retired miner Henry Muñoz explains another way how this controversial mining project will use water. #SaveOakFlat #Arizona #Indigenousrights #Environmentaljustice #Water

About us
Hispanics Enjoying Camping, Hunting, and the Outdoors (HECHO) is a group for Latinos who value our nation’s public lands. We work to protect healthy watersheds, clean air, and robust wildlife habitats so that we can continue to enjoy and practice centuries-old cultural traditions that depend on these open spaces. From southwestern deserts to northern forestland, Latinos throughout America have a strong connection to our nation's diverse landscapes. We urge our elected and appointed officials to safeguard our precious public lands, so that our children can enjoy fishing, hiking, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities for generations to come. HECHO provides a platform for our voices to be heard. We want decision makers to know that conservation is central to our values, grounded in our traditions, and a priority for the benefit of future generations.

A national monument designation would ensure that the Dolores Canyons landscape is managed in a manner that prioritizes the conservation of biodiversity and preserves public access for recreation. "Public lands around that area are largely undeveloped, that right now there are just wild lands that's critical for wildlife and other bird species. There's lots of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in a really beautiful setting where you can still find solitude. You just feel like you're in a different place in a different time than the normal hustle and bustle of the big cities," says Jerry Cordova, HECHO HCLC member and specialist for the Stormwater Enterprise of the City of Colorado Springs. According to the 2024 Conservation in the West Poll, ninety percent of Westerners believe that oil and gas companies should pay to clean up their messes – a burden taxpayers shouldered for too long. Let’s defend these reforms against misguided attempts to roll them back. After last year’s Supreme Court decision undermining decades of clean water protections, state-level protections for wetlands and waterways are more critical than ever. Wetlands are vital to keeping our rivers and drinking water supplies clean, reducing the risk of flooding, and ensuring adequate water supplies for communities, farms, ranches, and businesses. #Cleanwaterforall #Cleanwater #Water #NewMexico

The single largest investor in Rio Tinto, Resolution Copper’s parent corporation, is the government of China, through the state-owned company Chinalco. Resolution Copper has never committed to keeping the copper it seeks to extract beneath sacred Oak Flat in the U.S. for refining and sale. The copper will likely be loaded on trains and shipped out of Arizona and to a seaport in Guaymas, Mexico. The Guaymas Port already ships copper concentrate from Arizona to Asian destinations, including China. #SaveOakFlat #Arizona #Indigenousrights #Environmentaljustice #Water

This month, Representative Raúl M. Grijalva introduced the Great Bend of the Gila National Monument Establishment Act to protect 376,963 acres of public lands and preserve one of the most culturally significant and ecologically fragile landscapes in the southwestern United States. Protecting the public lands around the Dolores River Canyon in Colorado is critical to help preserve water quality and ensure watershed resilience. "We want to preserve that area's water quality and watershed resiliency. We want to protect the recreational components... to keep it intact and maintained for generations to come," says Jerry Cordova, HECHO HCLC member and specialist for the Stormwater Enterprise of the City of Colorado Springs. A national monument designation would safeguard this vital tributary of the Colorado River and the recreational opportunities it offers.
