🤔EU Batteries Regulation, what do you know about that? Last year, on July 23', a new law on more sustainable, circular and safe batteries entered into force, ensuring batteries are collected, reused, and recycled. This regulation supports the circular economy and enhances the EU's strategic autonomy. Key Highlights: - Low carbon footprint and minimal harmful substances - High collection, reuse, and recycling rates - Gradual introduction of carbon footprint limits from 2025 - Replaceable portable batteries by 2027 🔋How this affect EV batteries? The draft carbon footprint rules could also perversely incentivise bigger, heavier vehicles with higher energy consumption. As it stands, the EU Commission proposes to use the energy provided over the service life of the vehicle based on the battery durability and energy consumption of the vehicle. There is a risk that this methodology will incentivise the production of larger batteries and high energy consuming vehicles, which would award them a lower carbon footprint.
