On June 11, 2023, a tragic event unfolded when a tanker lost control while exiting the highway, leading to a collision beneath the bridge and a devastating fire. This incident resulted in the collapse of all six northbound lanes, including the shoulders, and compromised the structural integrity of the six southbound lanes. In response, High Steel Structures LLC was promptly engaged to fabricate components for the new bridge.
In the subsequent months, High Steel Structures LLC manufactured a total of 16 girders, varying in length from 106 to 108 feet. The first batch of these girders arrived on-site in late August.
Initially, I-95 was reopened twelve days after the accident, with a temporary six-lane roadway filled with recycled foamed glass aggregate. This interim solution allowed traffic to resume on the innermost lanes while construction crews diligently worked to install the girders and pave the road on both sides.
The completion of the second phase was marked by the arrival of the final shipment, which was received on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.
