About us
HERS (Higher Education Resource Services) is a leadership development and research organization that is dedicated to creating and sustaining a vast network of women and gender-diverse leaders in higher education. Through various programs that support leaders in every stage of their careers, HERS provides program participants with transformational experiences and opportunities that result in stronger institutions of higher education. HERS believes that impactful leadership not only requires women and gender-diverse individuals in leadership positions, but demands that each bring their unique voice and perspective to their leadership role. Founded in 1972, HERS proudly serves as both a network and hub of resources for women and gender-diverse people eager to advance both themselves and their respective institutions of higher education. For nearly 50 years, HERS has made great strides with respect to the advancement of women and gender-diverse individuals in higher education. However, there is much work to be done and HERS plans on boldly moving onward to ensure greater diversity and equality in university and college leadership moving forward. HERS is dedicated to creating and sustaining a vast community of women and gender-diverse leaders through leadership development programs and other strategies, with a commitment to achieving equity, inclusivity and excellence in higher education. In 2023, six of eight Ivy League universities celebrated a milestone with women at the helm as presidents. However, four of these women have stepped down within the past year and were replaced by white men. These departures highlight the ongoing pressures women face in higher education leadership and raise concerns about the durability of progress toward gender and racial equality in academia. Gloria Thomas, president of HERS, expressed her thoughts, saying, "Enthusiasm among women to take on leadership roles is falling. The solution is to better educate governing boards, which tend to be far less diverse than the colleges they oversee and have little understanding of the different perspectives that a woman or person of color brings to the position." Proudly introducing HLI Alum Patricia Okker, a HERS executive coach! Central to her coaching is a belief that higher education has under-invested in leadership development and that this neglect has made it easier to continue the status quo in which many people—women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and others—are seen as “not looking like” academic leaders. As an executive coach, Okker focuses on supporting the courageous and resilient leaders that higher education so desperately needs and brings to each coaching relationship the full range of her experience at both a large research university and a small liberal arts college. While she draws on her experience as president, dean, and department chair—including being the target of a nationally publicized takeover— Okker offers customized coaching designed around the goals of each client. Working 1:1 with Pat Okker is an opportunity of a lifetime!
