Last week we awarded Larry Swanson the inaugural Robert B. Whittlesey Leadership Award at #HPNSeattle. The honor is bestowed to someone who embodies true leadership, embraces innovation and creativity, and cultivates engagement across our network – all of which represent the legacy of the award’s namesake. Bob Whittlesey founded three nonprofits (including HPN) and is widely regarded as one of the great unsung heroes of affordable housing – a tenacious and inspiring leader who died at 101 in 2023. Larry’s impact goes far beyond bricks and mortar. He has been a generous mentor, dynamic field catalyst, and staunch advocate for programs, policies, and investments to make housing more affordable and accessible. He was the major architect from the membership side of one of our first social enterprises – the Housing Partnership Insurance Exchange (HPIEx), a member-owned insurance captive. Larry was HPIEx’s first board chair and also served as HPN’s board chair for six years. Coincidentally, the member meeting marked the 20th anniversary of HPIEx, celebrating two decades of impact and partnership with IMA Financial Group, Inc., who worked closely with Larry and HPN staff to launch the enterprise. IMA supported the dinner at the Seattle Art Museum that commemorated the anniversary and celebrated Larry. Larry will be stepping down as CEO of ACTION-Housing, Inc. after 45 years once his successor is appointed early this summer. RMC is honored to be a participating organization in the Housing Partnership Network's Next Gen Talent Academy for the Fall Session. Learn how your organization can Empower Diverse Talent in Affordable Housing with the Next Gen Talent Academy (https://lnkd.in/gt5C67bn). As the demand for skilled, diverse talent in affordable housing continues to grow, many students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, remain unaware of the fulfilling career opportunities in this sector. The Next Gen Talent Academy is here to change that narrative. This pioneering initiative connects BIPOC undergraduate and graduate college students with leading practitioners in both nonprofit and for-profit affordable housing sectors nationwide, offering scholarships and college credit opportunities. The program runs three times a year, includes virtual courses, lectures, and guest speakers from the industry. Students not only gain insight into various career paths but also have the chance to visit affordable housing sites, enhancing their learning experience. For sponsors, this is a prime opportunity to guide and recruit from over 10,000 trained candidates, ensuring a continuous flow of talent ready to drive the industry forward. Congratulations to our own Yari S., Director of Loan Closings, for recently completing the Monge Capital Advisors Open Access Fellowship!
🎉Congratulations to our remarkable Fellow, Yari, on completing the Open Access Fellowship! 🎉 Since its launch in the Fall of 2021, the Open Access Fellowship has been a groundbreaking initiative, championed by Jeff Monge of Monge Capital and Gina Nisbeth, now of 9th & Clinton. This program was designed to address the lack of diversity in the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) industry, focusing on increasing Black and Latinx representation in community development finance. Yari has been an outstanding member of the 4th cohort, selected from a talented pool of individuals. With over 15 years of experience in the community development and affordable housing sector, she has brought her expertise and passion for community development to her fellowship at Monge Capital, an MBE-certified firm committed to investing in underserved communities. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Housing Partnership Network for their unwavering support of Yari’s journey. Under the mentorship of Jeff Monge and his incredible team, Yari has further expanded her knowledge and expertise, continuing to make a meaningful impact in the industry. We are so proud of Yari’s accomplishments and are excited to see all the incredible work she will continue to do in the future! 🌟 #OpenAccessFellowship #CommunityDevelopment #DiversityInFinance #LatinxExcellence #HousingPartnershipNetwork #MongeCapital #MentorshipMatters Yari S.

Lisa B. Alberghini is really remarkable. She has been an invaluable part of Housing Partnership Network, especially our signature peer exchange platform, not only because of her deep knowledge and expertise but also because she knows how to connect the country’s most prolific housing practitioners in ways that address our most significant social and economic challenges. Throughout her career, Lisa has been as efficacious working on the ground in communities as she has been in shaping federal housing policy or designing innovative financing solutions. She is always willing to listen, to share, to support, and to lead. The entire field of affordable housing is better off for her having been in it, and I'm wishing her well in retirement and the next chapter in her life.

Congratulations Abode Communities!
It was a pleasure to join my friends at Abode Communities to celebrate the dedication of La Veranda, an affordable and supportive home for families in the Boyle Heights community in Los Angeles. Ten years in the making, this new development represents the hard work and dedication of Abode Communities’ amazing development, architecture, property management, and resident service staff. Special thanks to Mayor Karen Bass for her vision and actions to tackle housing affordability and homelessness in the City of Los Angeles. Congratulations to Holly Benson and the whole team at Abode Communities.
