  • Newly released annual data collected by the IAEA’s Power Reactor Information System (PRIS) paint a picture of a clean energy technology at a crossroads amid the emergence of a new global consensus to accelerate its deployment. In 2023, while new grid connections were made at nuclear power plants in 5 countries, these clean energy gains were offset by reactor shutdowns. Despite this, electricity production from nuclear power rose by 2.6% compared to 2022, according to PRIS, the IAEA’s comprehensive and publicly available database on nuclear power. CEO at Urenco

Today we welcomed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, together with guests from the three Troika governments of the UK, the Netherlands and Germany, and the United States of America at an event to mark the development of the Centre of Excellence for Safeguards and Non-Proliferation, at Urenco’s Capenhurst site in the UK. The Urenco testing and training facility, a first of its kind globally, is a collaboration between those mentioned above and sees the repurposing of a decommissioned plant brought back into active life for this unique safeguarding purpose. I am very proud to be able to contribute and collaborate with this international community to help grow expertise in nuclear safeguards by building this dedicated facility at our UK site. We at Urenco will continue to use our expertise and technologies to support non-proliferation and the safeguarding of civil nuclear operations. #nuclearenergy #safeguarding #nonproliferation #innovation

  • Exposing gemstones such as diamonds, sapphires, and topazes to controlled amounts of ionizing radiation can alter their molecular structure, resulting in more vibrant colours and increasing their market value. These stones may retain residual radioactive material at levels that must be carefully controlled to ensure the safety of both jewellery industry workers and consumers. The IAEA collaborates with national regulators to maintain radiation safety standards for consumer products. atoms.iaea.org/4dnLewn

  • As nuclear power gains recognition as a crucial component of the #NetZero transition, the opportunity for small modular reactors (#SMRs) to reduce emissions is also growing. Due to their size, SMRs could be ideal for deployment in remote areas and regions with smaller electric grids. The latest version of the IAEA publication, 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐮𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫, now includes an annex that addresses aspects specific to SMR deployment. It also highlights the recent experiences of several countries that have completed or made significant progress in all three phases with other reactor types, as defined by the IAEA’s Milestones Approach. • While athletes competed at the #Olympics in #Paris2024, 55 high school students from 14 countries vied for gold in the first-ever International Nuclear Science Olympiad #INSO2024! Since 1959, the world’s brightest science students have faced off in international Olympiads. With the recent inaugural competition in the Philippines, nuclear science has now joined the list. The week-long Olympiad featured both experimental and theoretical examinations, culminating in an awards ceremony where 8 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze medals were presented. Special awards were also given to the top scorers in each examination, and a Nuclear Science Olympiad Ambassador was named. 🏆 Discover the winners of this historic event: atoms.iaea.org/46HJwn6
