Great #accessibility feature coming to iOS 18.

"Music Haptics is a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music on iPhone" I'm very excited about this #accessibility feature coming to Apple's iOS 18. In addition to helping all audiences experience music, my hope is that this will expand to all interaction sounds on iPhone like notifications and more. This is something that has been very challenging to implement with clients in the past. When we consistently and cohesively pair interaction and branded sounds with haptic feedback we can create universal messaging for everyone. https://lnkd.in/dzriakut #sonicdesign #interactionsounds

The future of UI is AUI (auditory user interface). Check out this fascinating Ted talk.

“Heads up and hands free. Get back into the world” I highly recommend you check out this awesome Ted talk by jason rugolo and the fascinating technology his company IYO is creating for #audiocomputers. Their AUI (Auditory User Interface) seems like the most promising I've seen to naturally engage and connect with a device without a display. The real breakthrough in my opinion is moving away from visual interface (which is cerebral) and instead move to the audio space (which is inherently tied to emotion). I for one would like nothing more than to keep my eyes out of my phone and connect with the world and my loved ones around me. In the talk he mentions other sonic technologies like personalized soundscapes for wellness as well as psychoacoustic technologies like beam forming to help us hear better and engage more deeply. In future development I personally think there's a place for #interactionsounds in the AUI to speed up a process. We can communicate so much information and emotion in just one brief sound. Imaging hearing a brief confirm sound to a request instead of a sentence. Bravo to Jason and the team. Can't wait to hear what's next! https://lnkd.in/ghVPMtUZ

Calle Stenqvist I totally agree with your assessment. I was part of a global research study that verified that universally people perceive downward motion as either emotionally Neutral or as a Close to an experience. I think the benefit to "Rebound" is that the reverb of the top note creates a sustain which makes the overall sound feel less negative and more neutral. That said, I'm very surprised that apple would default to a sound that feels like a "close," because a notification by definition is a "Heads up" that alerts the user that there's information to be read or an action to be taken. While I agree the sounds are beautiful, I think this was a mistake from a sonic design perspective.

🍏 Apple goes against the norm with UX sound design with iOS17. The default notification sound has changed from Tritone to Rebound. Rebound has a descending movement (a perfect 5th interval). As we've come to learn, descending movements usually mean close, no, cancel, deny, negative etc. while ascending means success, confirm, open, notify, yes, positive. 🤔 What are we/Apple trying to say here? Is it a conscious decision to break the norm and go against common practice and our conditioning, if so should receiving a notification be thought of as "case closed...message delivered" I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when that discussion took place... Kudos to the craftsmen and women behind the sounds. They're beautifully crafted. 📢 #uxsound #sounddesign #design #uxdesign #uidesign
